OK here is the question. When selling something on the well known auction site do you send the goods as soon as paypal payment has been received or do you withdraw funds to your bank account and wait for the 2-3 days for funds to clear before sending the goods? What is your way of doing the deal? Interested in all your experiences. Many thanks in advance.

I mail, when the Paypal payment arrives.

No bad Paypal stories, but UK post and France post both lost a package each, this summer, and my post office is taking forever to process the insurance claim.

Ship when receive PayPal. Removing funds, like you suggest, will not protect you if you pulled a fast one. If you did everything honestly, why worry?

I ship within 24 hours of paypal payment if from and to a confirmed address. Otherwise I wait a bit to see if payment stays put.

I send it as soon as I get the money in my paypal account.

I wouldn't worry so much about that as I would about making sure you can prove you sent the item and that it was received.
I would double check this in Paypal's fineprint, but if the item is worth $250 or more, you should use SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION on your shipment.

For example, it's not enough to insure it through the US Postal Service. Even though the USPS collects a signature on items insured at $200 or more - that signature will do you no good if the buyer files a dispute with PayPal.

Paypal's fine print says the signature must be viewable online. And those insurance signatures cannot be viewed online. Only the signatures collected on the SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION form can be viewed online.

Nigel, if Paypal has access to your bank account, it doesn't matter where the funds are, if you live in the US credit system ....

Avoid shipping outside of the US, since that poses the highest risk to the seller (delivery not trackable).

These days, payments may only clear if the buyer left positive feedback, BTW.

I always state in my ads immediate shipping once the funds have posted to my account and I do just that. Some paypal payments don't post right away and you get a notice from paypal letting you know that the payment is pending... it can take several days. Once they actually post in my account I ship.

after funds clear

after funds clear

As a seller, I don't ship until the funds clear into my bank. Paypal can't take from your bank w/o your permission. Just in case I have 2 accounts and transfer funds from one to the other after they post into the account.

Shipping before clearing into your account leaves you open to chargebacks, stolen cards, paypal freezing your account for no reason, and other problems, for which ebay and paypal will be no help.
