How many 36 exp rolls are you getting from a 100 foot reel?

I want to see if I can justify buying a 100 foot reel of Tri-X for $79 or if I get more 36 exposure rolls from buying 14 rolls at $5.50 each.

I don't remember how many rolls I got out of the last 100 foot reel of film I bought.

How many rolls can you make from a 100 foot reel of film?

at around 5 feet per roll, which i think will give close to 36 exposures, you should get 20 rolls (100/5 = 20). I'm allowing 54" for the pictures and 6" for leader and tail. Maybe an inch or two more would be safer. But I think if I were doing this, I might make the rolls a bit shorter, for easier loading onto my Nikor stainless steel reels. A full 36 exposure roll wants to overhang the reel just a bit at the end, which is a nuisance.

I do 30 exp on the counter per roll, getting something like 23-25 rolls.. depending if I forget what i'm doing..!

Thanks guys, I just could not remember how many rolls I got out of that last reel, but about 20 rolls at 36 exp sounds right. Rolling them to 30 exp sounds like a good idea.

I always managed about 18.
The idea of cutting 30's is good.
You lose in leader and blank begin shots.
Leicas can avoid those blank shots..
My Nikon F3 shoots 3 blanks. I gently rewind back..
Getting at least two more.
I am not sure it pays anymore..
Bulk loads have become very expensive,
here in Toronto. Price almost doubled..

If I am lucky and nothing goes wrong with any of my reloadable IXMOO or Nikon film canister than about 18 rolls a 36 exposures are possible using a Watson 66B loader.

For a regular 36exp roll film, I usually can get 39 exposures from it with my Leica. In order to get the same 39 exposures, I have to roll about 42 exps with my Arden 74 bulk films. For that, I can get 18 and half rolls from 100ft.

I've noticed this too, with factory loads. There's a short tail beyond the end of the spiral on a Nikor reel, but there is not on a Hewes.

I've 'counted the spirals' on both and they were equal in number. Suspect the Hewes warp space-time to get that extra bit of length. What I would expect, given their price.

18 here, but given that at some point I lose track of which roll is exposed and which is fresh, I account for developing at least 1 unexposed roll. so 17 for me 🙂

18 is the standard ie if you're going to roll equivalent lengths to 135-36.

You can get Tri-X for $4.29 / roll no tax (where you live) and reasonable shipping from B&H @ bhphotovideo.com . Bulk rolls are 69.95 which divided by 18 is $3.89 a roll which frankly makes it not worth with the time and effort for me.

However: Freestyle (freestylephoto.biz) sells re-branded Tri-X called Arista Premium 400 for $2.89 a roll. They used to have 100 foot rolls for $49.95 if I remember correctly but no longer: and this is because Kodak has cut them off and the days of Arista Premium are soon to end -- maybe six or nine months.

Funny enough, with Kodak film its always been 18 full rolls plus 1/3 to 1/2 roll extra. With Fuji 100ft rolls its 20 rolls perfect, with maybe 4-6 inches extra. This was true for B&W as well as color neg and color slide, same Watson bulk loader. I bulk loaded tri-x and fuji neopan for 10+ years as a photojournalist, rolling 2-3 100ft rolls Per Week so I know it wasn't a one-time event. Fuji 100ft bulk rolls are just longer.

18-19.

I like 30 exposure rolls so i can make proof sheets with 8x10 paper without cutting in the negs. That's a frustration. Pity that 8.5x11 single fb papers aren't easily found anymore.

I have hand-rolled thousands of rolls, and that's no exaggeration. I've always used the Lloyd's loaders and loaded 35 exposures per roll because that's what fits the neg sleeves I prefer (seven strips of five exposures each). I get about 20 rolls per 100 feet.

I still have some HP-5 and Fujichrome original 100D transparency film (my favorite film of all time) in loaders, but haven't rolled or shot anything lately. Digital is too darned easy/convenient!

I honestly have no idea how many I get per 100' roll. I tend to roll whatever my mood is for the moment as needed. Sometimes I just want to do a few tests of a new lens so I do a short 10-15 exposure roll. Sometimes I do 26-28 cranks on the Lloyd because that fits in my Paterson reels comfortably and I can handle them easily when wiping water off etc. I sometimes go up to 34 or so cranks but usually no more then that.

I know I didn't really answer the question but that's what I have to say about it just the same. 🙂
