Hey all,

So I'm in the process of making some prints on several different papers, Epson Exhibition Fiber and Premium Luster for a showcase in a couple months. I wanted to know whats the best size for the image to be places on a 13X19 (Super B) print. Should I make each images 11x17 to leave a 2 inch boarder or less? I'm not sure what's going on in terms of framing them just yet but Just wanted to know what my fell photographers and printers do. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Dwayne

I let the format dictate how the photo will be presented on paper. On 16x20" paper (wet printing) I always printed 12" x 18" or 14" x 21" ... now, with 13x19 paper on my home printer, 12 x18" works prefectly for my needs. On 8x10" (or 8.5x11") paper, I make 6"x 9" prints generally.

Dwayne,
I usually do not think about borders at all when printing (both darkroom or inkjet).
I let the image determine what size is good for the print. IOW what size does the image looks good at.

Then I ask my framer to trim the paper right up to the image and mount it on a acid-free backing, at that time I decide the size of the borders.

For selling, I just have the matte in the usual frame sizes (one or two sizes bigger than the image). Therefore the buyer does not have to spend more money for custom-sized frames, unless they wanted to.
