One of the problems with FSU lenses is the degradation of the grease which becomes waxlike and sticky. The only proper cure is to strip the lens and re-lube it. I have just serviced a J9 for a forum member because the collimation was out. The focus appeared smooth but there was a strange odour and oil was seeping out of the lens. The reason for this became obvious during the stripdown. Someone before the RFF member decided it needed a re-lube and rather than do it properly, had used WD40 to "solve" the problem. It was everywhere including beginning to get on the optics.
A full sheet on the strip, rebuild and collimation will follow.
