Hi. My name is Ondrej and I am addicted to buying cameras in auctions.

Just bought my second Zorki 4 with Jupiter 2/50 and strap lugs for an equivalent of 18 US$. I couldn't resist. Even though I already have one in mint condition. I just want more, more, more...

Anyone have any sugestions on a good doctor to cure my GAS ? :D

:D :D :D :D :D
Unfortunately I must admit you are right :(

Let me know if you spot any nice Kiev-5 in Bratislava
Actually there is one Kiev in a second hand shop called ProLaika in the centre. I don't know which version is it (I guess 4 with meter). They're asking 1600 SKK, but it looks very shabby - stripped down leatherette. If you want I might go look at it and let you know if it's in good mechanical shape... And don't be affraid, I won't buy it, I'm not interested in Kievs :D

Last night I saw a TV program about smoke quitting. In this case, about GAS, you should have a plan:
1. Take note every time you buy a camera: day, time and money
2. Next week: delay a few hours or days the impulsive buy.
3. Next week: keep all your cameras in a bag and carry it when you buy a new one.
4. Schedule the "final day", the day when you should stop buying cameras, lenses, filters, bags, etc. The night before, you should take a long trip with your bag, without eating, drinking water and many others (remember the money is for the cameras), and even you should sleep with the cameras.
And finally in one month, you should examinate your blood (wallet maybe) and determine if you are totally cured.
Good Luck
Dr. Juancho :)

PD: I haven't tried I'm teoric.

It rather depends upon the type of wife.

Mine, while being quite an assertive woman without any special interest in photography, is fully collaborationist on the issue.

A totally different matter is wether she has the patience to wait for me selecting and exchanging lenses while we are on an overseas trip.

luckily, my wife to be is a wedding photographer and actually encourages my habits. even bought me a Bessa R. JUsut trying to save the $$$ tight now so I dont get slammed with huge CC bills after the wedding.

Cure for GAS:

There is the previously mentioned external control mechanism which is a wife. Consider yourself very fortunate if you are in this situation, even though you may not think it's so great.

Another cure comes through an internal control mechanism. Unfortunately, like immunity to disease, it is slow to develop It must run it's course, and may have a significant impact on your pocketbook. You must simply indulge yoursef, within your financial means of course. Buy any camera that you find interesting so that you build up a level of experience from which to move towards the cure. Eventually, you will come to know which cameras "do it" for you, and which cameras can be sacrificed in order to achieve your goal. Unfortunately for me, this meant Leica and Contax cameras in RFs. If you have bought wisely during your unrestrained GAS phase, you may find yourself able to sell off these cameras (to others still in this preliminary stage of infection) and recoup some of your cash expenditures. Only once you reach this self-understanding of your needs/wants, which can only be reached through personal experience, you are on the path to a cure for GAS.

Forutunately, that's where I am now. This is also perhaps why my relationship with RFF has changed. With all the gear talk, it's way more fun if you are in the midst of a full-blown case of GAS. Once past that, it is more of a distraction. I should be spending more time taking pictures and in the darkroom, catching up on a bunch of film that needs developing and hopefully some frames that should be printed!

perfectly stated Frank.

I think it's real easy:

Get away from the computer

Not so easy sometimes, especially when you work in front of one and this stuff is what gets you thru the day. Reading this forum and other sites causes severe GAS buildup

You have to actually tell your wife how much you are spending ;)
TELL HER????
What, even when you've intercepted the postman so she doesn't even know? ( not that I stoop to these shameful levels) On the other hand, once she got used to them arriving, at a cost of only £10-£20, she didn't worry too much, it became a sort of joke. That's when you can REALLY let loose and buy something (that will work) expensive, she may think that all camras stuff is as cheap as these. Te-he-he. ;)

Please help me

Fidget, that was my case. When I started down the RF path, all my cameras were below $100 and she came to believe all my cameras were quite inexpensive... even my Leicas.

The look in her eyes when she heard the price of a used M3 from a camera store employee was just priceless...

So far, she thinks I'll snap out of my photography habit some day. Little does she know that I'm not alone. :)

Have you completely gone off your nut? What in the Wide-World-of-Sports would I go and do a totally imbecilic thing like that for? Sleeping in the garage on cardboard boxes with the lawnmower as a pillow is just not that comfortable. . . anymore.

Anyone have any sugestions on a good doctor to cure my GAS?
Spyderman, no worries. The cure for GAS is easy and there's no need for a Dr. It's only a temporary condition. Once you own every last camera and every last lens in the universe, GAS pretty much goes away on it's own.

Sometimes a wife is not enough.

Thanatos: Hey, I saw a Contax G2 system at the local camera exchange for 1250 GBP.
La Thanatos: Why don't you get it?
Thanatos: wibble wibble wibble. Ok then.

Funny thread :D I LOL all the time :D

Thanks for the support. Now that I know I'm not alone I feel much better. So good that maybe I should go look at some auctions... oh there's a FED-3b for 8 US$, and a FED-5B for 2 US$... :D (but still 8 days till the end, so I think it'll go up)

This is most interesting - most of us find the significant other an important stakeholder in our decision making. Now while we are getting on productively acquiring important collections of broken stuff, WHAT ARE THEY UP TO? I think this approval/disapproval is a distraction technique. Any ideas?

Well ... ive asked mine "how much those 3 bottles of skin care products costed?". She replyed that "one costed €200 but will last all summer!!, the other €75 and the third was a gift from the seller"... gift? yeah right.... But, after this litle talk i'm going to get some new gear this month :p :p :p

See - I knew it. How many know what a bottle of OIl of Olay costs? And why did they change the name from Oil of Ulay?

Personally, while I have been learning to load a steel developing tank, I find I will soon be the proud master of a new kitchen, garden gate and loft extension. Costs a lot more than a few old Zorkis! ;)
