HP5+HC110: Update

Hi All...
Rather than continue "HP5+HC110+PhotoFlo," I thought best to open a new Thread
with new info. And thanks for the support in my fledgling efforts earlier this week...
like that's ancient history now ;-)

The most common Dilution with HC110 is B or 1+9.
According to Mike Wilde of Misissauaga, Canada, a lot of users go more dilute,
and call the next Dilution H. Many, simply double the B and have 1+18.

Since my negs in the first run were underdeveloped, I felt that Dilution H would work well... however, Covington factors in
additional time for greater dilutions.

Thus, the capacity or total volume of my 2-reel stainless tank is 460ml.

So then, 1+18 = 19... and 19 is my single "unit" for syrup plus water.

460 divided by 19 = 24ml of HC110 for my particular tank.

460 minus 24 [the developer syrup] = 432ml of water to make.

OR: 24 + 432 = 456... leaving a tad of air space at the top of the tank.

I developed tonight at 68f, adding 2 minutes to the development time
of 10 minutes, for Dilution H [Dil. B = 5 min]. Thus my developing time was
12 minutes.

The negs are drying and they look great. Hope to have scans over the weekend.

Hey Mike,

I didn't see the old thread you referred to, but just wanted toss my hat in the ring and say I'll be watching for results. I'm curious if your conclusions are similar to mine.

My standard film and developer is HP5+ with HC110. After some trial and error, I ended up with your same figures.. Dilution H for 12 min. @ 68deg F. I agitate for 10 seconds every 2 minutes. They tend to be a little dense, but I generally develop to print instead of scan.

Most of the photos in my gallery from the last year and a half or so are from this combo, through my scanning and finishing leave a lot to be desired.

f/stopblues, did you mean 60 degrees F? I shoot Tri-X 400 and develop in HC-110 (h) (USA) at 68 degrees F, with similar agitation for 13 minutes. And I have read on the Internet that HP5+ is similar in development times to Tri-X. Just curious, no argument.

Hi... Development time was 12 minutes at 68f... like f/stopblues above,
but with less agitation. I don't wet print any more, thus I do not want
excessive density.

Here are the sample Scans:

All 3 pix were done with a modified J8 50/2 [Brian Sweeney] on my Bessa R.
The development details are in Posts above, in this Thread.

- The Steps or Peaceful Place at f11... and

- The five Cyclamen at f5.6... and

- The Saab grill at f4.

The payoff here is from negatives with more contrast, than from the first
run earlier this week. In the pix here, I'm pleased with the shadow detail
and highlights.

And an observation is:
Some of my Tri-x negs from my PJ years developed in D76 1:1... are overdeveloped.
I like the flatter look of the HP5 negs, and believe
me, I like Tri-x as well! Further tests will be done with Tri-x, which is more expensive in Israel.

Thanks Mike, I like your HP5 shots, you are getting good shadows, very nice. Lets us see what happens with your Tri-X. Here is a site that has some shadow detail discussion and shots.
