Went to this exhibit today, it is very good and well worth seeing. It was crowded and the tickets have timed entry but they don't seem to pay any attention to the time when you go in. Because of the popularity of the exhibit they have extended the date to Jan. 4th, and they have evening openings Wed thru Fri I think. Details are at the link below. Don't miss it!

Ansel Adams at the MFA

Did you rent the headset? I've been to the exhibit a couple times, and it's very good, but I haven't gotten the headset yet. It is an impressive collection, spanning his entire career. It's quite striking to see how his technique and equipment progressed from his early work.

Yes I liked his later work much more than his earlier stuff. I did not rent the headset so I'm afraid I can't tell you if it was worth it.

Wish I could make it up there. I saw an Adams exhibit 2 years ago in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was great to see some actual prints, besides those printed in books. If your in the area go see it!

Saw this exhibit three weeks ago -- fantastic! The prints on display are beautiful. If you're going, one way to deal with the crowds is to go to the end of the exhibit and work your way back to the start.

Aside from landscapes there are a few still-lifes and portraits included in the exhibit. Very interesting.

I went today. It was excellent. And there were two handheld shots as well -- one a really nice "candid" shot of Georgia O'Keefe. Presumably these were taken with an RF, since the latest print was dated 1949 🙂

I just wish they had more prints for purchase -- isn't it always the case that the one(s) you want isn't available for sale?

I have to wake up, this have been there since August and I had not know about it.

The MFA in Boston is a wonderful museum. All of their collections are worth a visit.

It is worth seeing, no question. Remember that if you're thinking about going call the MFA and reserve your tickets. The tickets are by date and time because they are overflowing with people. If you just turn up at the museum you will not get in - this happened to a co-worker earlier this week.

Peter, yes you are right. I went Thursday morning and it was sold out. Luckily, I had Friday off too and live just a bus ride away.

The MFA also has an interesting Cubism exhibition going, with some great drawings by Picasso. And of course, their permanent collection ain't too shabby.

He's alive!! Oh, you mean the exhibit... 😉

I believe the same exhibit was over here in the Twin Cities over a year or so ago. I didn't know about it either, I just happened to "walk in".

Quite the opposite of the fanfare that Velázquez got in Chicago almost three years ago. There were signs all over downtown Capone city for "The Velázquez Exhibit".

So we went to look at "The Velázquez Exhibit". We found one painting by Velázquez, and then walked all over to find the rest of the Exhibit. Finally we asked one of the ushers where the rest of the exhibit was. "We only have one Velázquez".

So it was "The Velázquez Exhibit" to much fanfare. It's all in the marketing.

Different museums and galleries have different approaches, I guess. So don't feel bad, Rover.

Gabriel at least in the metro Boston area the advertising has been intense for this Ansel Adams retrospective so maybe it is all in the marketing. Perhaps that accounts for the crowds but the people I've met who've seen it were universally enthusiastic so there is a word of mouth effect too...

BTW, if you like Velázquez you should try the Prado in Madrid - unbelievable! 🙂

Hi,

we went yesterday asnd it was a zoo. More peple than should have been.
I was surprised about the small size of the pics, most seemed to be contact prints.
Also the lighting was poor imho, the prints all appered to be very dark. Once you managed to get closer to print the tone ad details were gorgous.

Ciao Joerg
