HU: Rare Hexanon

I want a job in that store with first dibs on all the great Konica lenses they come up with. They have a 50 2.4 LTM and a 50 M-Hexanon.

Anybody knows how the 50/1.2 M-Hexanon compares with the 50/1.4 Summilux aspherical?

I think those may have come with kits and somehow been separated out of the 2001 total kits.

I've seen photos from these lens, pretty close to a noctilux.

Still drooling from the last time one of these popped up on the *bay. This will be fun to watch.

is that a can of worms?

Imagine a Summilux Asph thats not 1.4 but 1.2 ;)

Well, actually I don't really know, but from very few photos I have seen from that lens - I like it.

I own both, and it is a can of worms! I do prefer the Noctilux, but like the M-Hexanon quite bit as well. The OOF signatures are slightly different, though I do find both to be pleasing. I should add that the Hexanon is extremely well built, and focusses perfectly on my M8.

Here are couple of Hexanon bokeh examples:

It's good, but it's not that good. I have one, along with the summilux ASPH. Performance wise, the Summilux ASPH is significantly sharper wide open, but the hexanon has a lovely rendition. I would say it is pretty similar to the 75mm Summilux, only not quite as beautiful...if only for the shallower dof on the 75mm. I would place it between the 50 lux ASPH and the 50 pre-asph in performance.

By the way, if someone wants to give me 4000 bucks for it, it's yours!

I did an evaluation of several different lenses close up and wide open, and the 50/1.2 and 50/1.4 ASPH were among them.

It was here: http://www.stuartrichardson.com/cuwo.htm

Here is the 50/1.2

And the 50/1.4 ASPH

I don't know if I still have the crops uploaded, but the ASPH was sharper. It was not night and day, but it was definitely there...the contrast is higher too, as you can imagine.

Raid -- I have no idea.

I could borrow the 60/1.2 so if I also can borrow a 50/1.2 I will be able to do a test.

I would lend you mine, but I am 2500 miles away from it at the moment...and it is another 1000 or so from you!

By the way, nice shots Tony.

Here is one more that I have used as an example of the lens. I believe it was f/1.2 at 1/8th.

well, one on ebay sold for $2300. Not $4000, but still - not cheap at all. I guess I'll find me a Canon 50/1.2 for now. yet I do hope to own one of these - 50 or 60 Hex 1.2 one day.

Stuart,

Thanks for the "thoughts" of a loaner. It is the intention that counts.:D
Maybe I should compare the 60/1.2 [if borrowed] with my old Canon 50/1.2?

To be honest, I don't get it completely with all these Konica "Limited edition stuff".
As it is a small market niche, you can reach collectors best if a small series is called "limited edition". I.e. the UC-Hexanon 35/2 which limited (1,000 pieces) edition is available again on the new market, and this is common focus lenght/speed, and a desirable, good lens, not only for a small number of rich collectors but for users as well. So I wonder, where are all these (2,000 pieces) 50/1.2 gone ? And all these 60/1.2? (another "limited series" as well!)
All guys who are bored because "everybody" still has a Noctilux, or a Canon 50/1.2 which cost less than 1/10 of it in a like-new condition?
Of course, all of them nicely made, but so big and heavy! 62mm filter for a RF standard lens, uff! (OK a Canon 50/0.95 has 72mm but it's the fastest 35mm lens in the world anyway)
So I didn't get it, sorry. Maybe someone could explain it to me.
I haven't seen a lens diagram of both designs yet, probably there's no one published, but do any of the buyers care if they just got a re-designed - pretty good - SLR lens for that money.
Who knows...

Cheers, Frank
