I'm hoping that the random gallery shots which were once displayed on the main page are only gone because the slot is presently taken with the contest. I explored people's galleries much more often when it was up because I would see something interesting and be able to go right to it. Anyone else?

I agree. I really liked the random gallery shots. Now I tend to forget to look in the galleries.

I also feel I miss some great photographs in the gallery. Many people out there have AMAZING shots that I might not otherwise find. I do understand however that there is a need for sponsors advertising/links (and of coarse the competition)... Could it not be put under the 'cool links' ?

I miss them too, but ca live without them if it means the page loads faster and more reliably.

This goes back a few weeks when the site was very slow. Jorge made administrative changes to the site; next thing the random images were gone from the home page and were reduced on the gallery page. At any given time, the site has 200 visitors, and that can take somebandwidth and disk-banging. I would like to see a "cool-link" to random gallery images. The Sister site, dslrexchange.com, still has random images.
The random images take a while to load and are not likely to get a cache hit on your computer, as the sponsor images do.

i think jorge has tried different things in order for the site to be a bit faster. this was true on the old server which had problems handling us.
with the new server, when the bugs are gone, perhaps they will return.
it's always best to put this sort of post in the site feedback section as i think jorge tries to look in there with regularity.

Maybe once the contest ends the Random Pics will come back, since it seems the contest announcement is occupying that "real estate" right now (?). Seems like there is only so much space.
