I just ordered these two items to hold up my $100 Speed Graphic.

This

and this

My wife made me do it. :D

No. It's even OK if you use those with your M5.

A good tripod is a must. Love my Gitzo/Arca-Swiss.

Roland.

I like ball heads. That one looks like a good one.
Years ago now, I bought a used Linhof "Giant" tripod that extends to about 10ft.

I have the exact same and really love it. All very finely crafted precision mechanical devices. I use mine for my panoramic cameras, especially the Noblex. Now you need the L-plates that attach the cameras to the head. That's a whole new area of GAS! :bang:

And a ladder to go with it? ;)

I had a Majestic for a while that I think went to 14 feet. It had extension legs and a rapid column nested in its geared column. The best feature of this tripod was that it had three spirit levels, one for each leg.

For the record, the objects of my recent spouse induced GAS attack are a Really Right Stuff BH-55 head and a Gitzo GT3530 tripod.

Peter,

Sorry, I don't have a clue. I think the GT3530 is closer to the 1348, etc. It's a 3 Series tripod. If it helps any, the outside diameter of the main leg tubes is 1 1/4" and it's a Mountaineer series carbon fiber tripod.

RRS is an interesting brand, I'd like to see some of their ball heads in person. I've only seen Arca and Markins, which are both excellent. I've only heard good things about RRS, too. Nice setup!

Probably not. But I'm not allowed to buy another tripod. So, I'm prepared for whatever comes along.

Speaking of which, over at The Large Format Forum a Deardorff camera, lens, film holders & Zone VI Heavy wooden tripod sold in 10 minutes for $1,750. Hmmmm...that works out to 1 M5 and 1 lens from my inventory.

That Deardorff setup was a steal.

And yup, it is very cool that you can really put together a more than credible LF setup without taking a second mortgage. One of the other nice things about LF is that if you take good care of your gear the resale is good-- I'm in the process of "re-orienting" my lens collection based on a recent decision to shoot both 4x5 and 5x7, in the end, I won't end up really losing any money at all. Are you really thinking about 7x17  ? Wait until you see those negatives!

Nice new tripod/head setup --- I've had a Gitzo 1325 and a Markins Ball head for years, now complimented by a Feisol 3442 + Bogen geared head. The Gitzo has been all over the place and by no means babied -- no problems (except for when the naughty beagle chewed a rubber foot...:bang: ) .

Oh, and I would also look into some plates-- makes switching cameras (for that inevitable next step ;) ) much, much easier.

Enjoy it all -- I know I have.

Buying the BH-55 was the easy part. Buying plates for all of my bodies is the hard part. That may be the impetus I need to clean house.

7x17 really appeals to me. I know it's insane, but I've seen the contact prints. OMG! I wouldn't need an enlarger, lenses, negative carriers...

The only tripod you will ever need. I bought mine used (and I mean really used) and gave it a complete CLA including new inner sleeves and it looks worn but works like new. I also had the Markins spikes with retractable plastic shoes fitted to the three lowest sections so it is now one sturdy tripod. Also maybe the beagle wouldn't like plastic... ;)
