i see the majority rules!

we now have to be a member and logged in to access the classifieds.

this is the beginning of being just like everyone else on the net!!

i may be all doom & gloom here but i think this is very bad news, very very bad news.

i could not be more upset and pissed off!!

i am in the heat of anger here and i don't want emotion to rule...but...i question if this is the same place it was yesterday and if it's the place for me.

this is completely jorge's decision made without any input from me.
this is his site and he has that right but i still think it's a very bad move!!

FWIW....

If I have learned anything from my involvement with photo.net (a place that I still care a lot about am devote energy to), it is that having a barrier of entry, no matter how small, will help keep the place in order.

If people have to work a little bit to become involved with the site/community, they are less likely to be trolling jerks just for the fun of it.

Now, there is no magic pill. And I have no idea if this move was needed or not. But overall I hardly see it as being a big deal. At least not from my point of view.

But, as my wife often tells me, what do I know?

There was a poll about that move yesterday, no ? 😕

I recall seeing the thread in the main page, but I couldn't really make my mind on a decision, so I didn't follow it to its end.

It certainly will ratchet up the membership count! 🙂 I don't see this as the demise of RFF, Joe. I was concerned about the effects of the first contest, and while things got crowded here, the spirit lives on. Trust in the membership. The good spirit here comes from the members.

🙂

I didn't vote because both, the pro and con arguments were very convincing. However, I'm sure if Jorge sees there is a problem he'll change the FS to open access again.

Personally... I find it annoying that in Nikonians.org, you must pay to post your FS of your gear. However, you can buy free of charge!

Let's see if it really deters some people.

ditto ... but maybe not quite as strongly. this means if i want to read the classifieds at work i have to log in ... which i really don't like doing on a shared machine on a monitored network.
guess this'll force me to actually work 😀

One way or the other doesn't matter to me, it's not like the door is closed and we can’t get in..

But just wanted to note that (apparently) photo.net now allows viewing of their classifieds without logging in (just noticed).

Don't worry, Joe, it is not that much of a change. Guests already had to register to post or send PM-s, so the only difference is they can't see the classifieds any more. Jorge didn't slam the door, he just pulled a curtain.

No skin off my nose - and I think I got skin to give... 😀

After all, it wasn't the classifieds that brought me here in the first place; I'm not sure it is the classifieds that would bring others here as well. I think people join for any number of reasons but like some others have said, it does offer a bit of incentive to keep things in order - especially considering how civil the place is with only one moderator and one owner 😀

Cheers
Dave

Wow, 20 people viewing this thread.

Honestly, I see this a an incentive for others to join the membership and hopefully it will prompt them to become active contributors. As long as membership is free and there is no further requirements associated with it, then I see this as an invitation and not a barrier.

I agree with Jaap, Joe. This change does little to alter what RFF is. It's almost trivial (except in principle) and will have nothing in terms of impact on RFF compared to the HCB street photo contest. Didn't that almost double our membership?

And as far as you not knowing if this is the place for you to be anymore Joe, that will put us in a bit of an awkward spot with your appreciation gift! Please don't do that to us, Joe! 🙂

it's the principle, not the action.

i don't like the messege it sends.

we are fine as is and unless there is a problem i am unaware of...

change for the sake of change is wasted energy.

don't worry frank, i'm not going anywhere, just blowing off some of the considerable steam i have going.

I'll step in for that gift if Joe leaves 😀

hehehehehe

Are you sure your frustration isn't just caused by a lack of computer (RFF) access at work these days?

there is limited access.
i'm using my office mates computer but can't stay for long periods.

and no, my frustration lies in closing a door or drawing the curtain on people unneccessarily.

no one has answered my initial question...what is the problem that this is the solution for?
