Ethical dilemma here.

I really like black cameras.

My P is chrome.

I can't afford an original black P. If I could afford one, I couldn't actually use it.

No, I'm not going to have my P painted - it's too nice.

Suppose I found a rough, dented, low-value P, have the dents removed, chrome stripped, and repaint it black?

Would this be unspeakable? Would I still be welcome here?

What should I do to make sure I'm not forging a black P? Use a deliberately non-authentic paint? Leave a bit unpainted?

As far as I can tell lots of people change the color of their cameras. There was a guy on photo.net recently who had his M4 pained bright yellow. I wouldn't stress over it... ;)

Here's a pic from photo.net:

Just give me a painted one too and you'd still be welcome.

As for the forging question, don't worry about it! If you ever decide to sell, just be honest and say it was painted.

I'd paint it, Shintaro paints Leicas black, Hammertone, Olive, Gray, etc. and the price only increases. He charges 500 to paint it, 100 for dent repair so it wouldn't be cheap but you would be the coolest "P" owner I know.
I am going tp paint one of my fixed lens RF's, not sure which one but I will do it soon, already have the paint.

Todd, what paint will you use? What will be your method for painting the engraving white?

Yep Todd, keep us informed, I've thought about getting a cheap worn FSU and do the same. The trick seems to be in the drying box...

John, I remember a VERY worn black P, lots of brassing, dents and with a first cloth curtain and a second metal one. It still went for > $1000.

Shintaro is an artist, but there's also another guy out there who repaints cameras, I think the info is somewhere here in a thread.

I had Shintaro paint my Nikon SP that was near perfect except for one place where it looked like it was dropped. The top plate and bezel were dent. $600, it came back like new. BUT: That is a $2,000 camera in chrome with the dent, would go for $3K with the paint. The "P" is a $250 camera in ex condition. Look for someone putting up a repainted P on Ebay, let them take the loss!

Or, you could try your hand at it. I would try with some cheap cameras first.

Are Canon Ps that expensive? Here in Sweden they goes for 150-250 USD at auction.

Rustoleum Black Hammertone?

Todd

#0000 brush for the white paint in the engraving? That's the part I wonder most about - how one gets that looking "factory".

For the engraving there are special paint-sticks that you run over the letters - the paint fills them with color, and you wipe off the excess; I think you can get them from MicroTools.

Brian, wow, you have a black SP??
You shouldn't talk about repainting SP's in public... else you miss a change to get 9200 USD for, simply for don't knowing where the black paint comes from.. ;-)
