I sold my Ricoh GR1s when it started to do funny things. Judging by comments on the web this was a wise thing to do. Shame, it was my favourite.

I rarely use my M6, my ltm cameras or even my Nex 6. Most of the time I use an old Canon digital Ixus p&s

However, I seek a digital alternative to the Ricoh.

For me it needs to be tiny like the original and have an excellent lens. A fixed focal length is fine but it really doesn't need too many pixels. Jpeg output needs to be good, rarely bother with RAW. If it had a built in EVF I'd be very happy but I am aware this might make it bigger.

So what is flavour of the month?

Easy (if you don't need an internal VF and flash), the upcoming GRIII or alternatively one of the previous versions, they have at least flash. You can't get closer to the GR1s.

The Ricoh GR digitals are top notch cameras. I’ve shot several versions of them, starting with the first version, then the second, then both the first and second versions with the larger sensor. Well more than half my digital exposures are with a Ricoh GR.

I was told some time ago that the digital GR is a much chunkier device than the film version and really not the same. I better find one and have a look/feel. I know that they are great cameras but pocketability (if there is such a word) is very important for me.

The GRDIII and IV are great cameras that live up to the GR1 legacy.

I had GRDIV sold it and regret that decision.

Luckily Bob came to my rescue with a GRDII that should arrive next week!

Once finances are back on top I plan to buy the GR/GRII for its 35mm crop mode.

I`ve had a number beginning with the first one and have just bought the latest version.
Very pocketable.

The first round digitals are perhaps even smaller than the film versions. Certainly no larger volume wise. The APS-C ones are marginally larger.

Even without holding it in hand, there're plenty of specs online for you to make the comparison. The APS-C GR is chunkier than a GR1, but not by much. Still pocketable, still retaining the same miniature camera with uncompromising quality approach (which wasn't quite so with the 1/1.7'' GR Digital series).

It's the obvious answer.

Would it not be sensible to just buy another GR1s? No digital camera will be exactly the same in use or deliver the same images. I wouldn’t ordinarily suggest this as you explicitly requested a digital alternative, but as you already have loads of film cameras, I assume you’re still interested in using film?

Get a GRD III or IV. Both have the faster f/1.8 lens and a macro mode that allows you to focus 1cm from the lens. Both outstanding cameras! And tiny, to boot.

I’ve had the 05, 07, 11 and currently the 16 from your list. Zero problems with any of them that I didn’t cause by dropping the camera. I have dropped the 05 (and got the 07), dropped that 07 and replaced it with another. Dropped two 11’s and have now a 16. My only advice would to be to not drop it.

It can be confusing, Ricoh did us no favor by restarting at GR.

Why they did not just continue onto 5-6-7....

I would stick with either the GRDIII or IV

If you want to use filters or the wide lens... you’ll need one of 3 adapter tubes adding to the confusion!

GH-1 = GRD I/II
GH-2 = GRD III/IV
GH-3 = GR/GRII/GRIII

Wide lenses:
GW-1 = 1st Ver
GW-2 = Revised
GW-3 = New for GR

Tele lens:
GT-1 = 40mm rough equiv. (GRD I-IV)

Viewfinders:
GV-1 = 21mm and 28mm Framelines
GV-2 = 28mm Framelines

Remote Release:
CA-1 = Corded Single Function Release

Regarding typical faults, check here and for the strength here some examples. I had (daily usage) no faults with my GRI in 2 years, also no dust issues which is quite strange living so close to the beach(have to hoover and swipe dust every 2 days). I would get the GRIII/IV or directly the GRIII assuming that the IQ is the same as previous models, here first impressions of the GRIII, scroll down for the english text.
