I'd like a IIIg

But as far as I can tell, I'm not willing, at this time, to pay for one. If they sold at IIIf prices, well, we'd be a go.

That's all. No real point to this very brief ramble, I guess.

At the price, they've got to be overrated. I'm willing to accept oddity and inconvenience, but not at US$900 and up.

$900 and up? They've gone down...

Mind you, mine was mint, boxed, case, guarantee.

I's rather have an M3 than a IIIg but I'd rather have an M2 than an M3. And I prefer an MP to either.

Cheers,

Roger

I have a IIIc and am pleased with it. The M series, particularly the M2 with 35mm framelines, is probably more useful. The IIIc version is cheaper and will give you the same experience without the cost.

For what they usually go for, you could take the chance and try a Zorki 3/3M. Who knows, you could end liking it...

Regards,

Oscar

think I might have said this before , but I would love the M2 viewfinder and winding lever to fit into my IIIf - and while they were at it they might as well trhow in a full size digital chip :)

anyway I would rather go with M2 thatn any of the ltm leicas

You are so right, for the price a used M will do.

IIIg has a relatively usable modern VF. In my opinion the most elegant Leica made - I always wanted one too.

ok being leica dumb- what's so special about a lllg?

why more than the other lll series cams?

The the larger viewfinder of the IIIg has parallax corrected 50 and 90 mm framelines. Plus, it's the only III series with a modern shutter speed progression.

I've seen them sell for $1500 on the big auction sight. That's quite a bit of change since a decent Red Dial IIIf with S/T usually sells for about a 1/4th of that, which would leave a lot of cha-ching left over for brightline finders and lenses.

I've thought often that a IIIg would be nice but the viewfinder and rangefinder would have to be a whole lot easier to use for a glasses wearer for the price

$900? $1500? Hmmm... either they really are overpriced, or the shop where I get most of my gear has them priced to sell, literally. They have a IIIf for $390, and a IIIg for $500. Next time I'm there I'll ask "what's wrong" with the IIIg. Err, I mean, why the IIIg is so overpriced, maybe I could get it for less than $500??

Think screw mount with an M3 View/Rangefinder unit.

You have a good plan to find out why they are so "overpriced" at your local shop. I sure would, lots of luck if you do.

ah, that would be nice.

i am amazed at how i am not put off by owning only screw mount cameras.
i don't miss a bayonet mount at all.
the plan is to have a body for each lens, very efficient...;)

The mint IIIg's favored by collectors are the ones which sell for $1000 for the body alone. User grade IIIg's ocasionally turn up for $500-$600 with a Leitz lens, usually an Elmar. Often what make the camera a "user" is chipping Vulcanite; this was the case with mine. One decent looking one, with lens, went on eBay for about $550 a couple of weeks ago.

The IIIg is quite pleasant to use with its brighter finder and 90mm framelines. A sound user M3 will go for about the same price without a lens. The IIIg is just slightly larger than the other Barnack Leicas, the M3 in noticeably larger.

Thanks, Graybeard: that's good to hear. Both my M2 and M3 are distinctly worn (and I like 'em like that) so maybe I'll be in the market for a similar IIIg sooner than I thought.

I had a IIIg and loved it. I used it with the 85mm Nikkor & 90 Elmar mostly. I sold it to get an M4-P. I had been using my CV 28mm on my IIIf but now it goes on the M4-P and the CV 21 is on the IIIF. An M3-MOT has the 90 TE and when I use the Canon 50mm f/1,2 it's on the M3.

The 50mm f/1.2 Canon blocked too much of the IIIg window.

But for use with any other 50mm LTM and 85/90 the IIIg is a sweet camera.
