This is worth an honourable mention and sharing because we more often read about publishers abusing photographers' rights than about professional, ethical business practices.. so it's nice to report a good news story.
Back in October last year I received two messages at almost the same time, one a PM here and another passed on to me by Mike Johnston from The Online Photographer. Both were from Matthew Lamb, editor of Island Magazine, one of Australia’s leading literary magazines, a non-profit quarterly published in Tasmania, Australia. Matt was interested in using one of my photos to illustrate a book review of a David Ireland novel from 1976, The Glass Canoe, about Australian pub culture in the 70s.
He'd seen my pictures taken in the Dee Why Hotel in Sydney in the mid to late 1970s here on RFF.
Matt went out of his way to track me down, joining RFF so he could PM me and also writing to Mike Johnson to see if he had my email (which he did, and then forwarded Matt’s request). Matt was upfront about offering payment and a subscription to Island magazine. The issue has now been published and I'm pleased with the context of my picture to illustrate the article. Matt and his staff were very friendly and helpful with my enquiries and made prompt payment. Everyone walked away happy.
In this day and age I think that’s pretty commendable - from what I read on forums and around the web it’s not uncommon for publishers to use images without permission, and then attempt to delay or avoid payment when confronted.
Therefore I'm happy to hand a boquet to Island Magazine and editor Matthew Lamb and his staff; and warm thanks also to Mike Johnston at TOP for going out of his way to make the connection.

Nice photo Lynn. Matthew Lamb is not only honourable, about which I am not surprised, but he also has a good eye. And a good memory.

I really love the image and can see why it was chosen. Everything from suits and polished shoes to thongs and singlets.
Says a lot about Australian culture, even now

It's nice to know such a story, for sure Matthew Lamb is a gentleman !
And I like your picture here for the atmosphere we can feel as the other your pictures in the RFF thread you linked. Bygone days are always touching our souls, we are all nostalgic...I think many photographers are nostalgic...Grazie

Congratulations, Lynn... Fine photo too, with all the elements to fit the theme, even with the "Bar" label if one needed any clarification of the venue. Clothing tells the time.

Fantastic news Lynn. I remember that photo, or another from the same place, that you added to the RFF gallery a while back. Congratulations and thanks for passing on your commendation to this publisher. - jim

Beautiful image! I enjoy the way you are allowing the world to play out in the frame. Excellent sensitivity to the moment.
