I had an issue with my Contax, in that the film counter would stop wherever it felt like, so I could never keep track of the exposures. I finally got up the nerve to investigate what the problem was, and found a shim or washer that had been placed in such a way that it made the pinion gear on the counter ride up out of the ring gear, and causing the spurious readouts.
I removed the shim/washer, and everything is back to normal now. My question would be, is this shim neccessary? Was it put back in the wrong place after a quikie repair?

if it works now, then forget about the shim. The shim would have been put there to provide proper spacing and smooth action. And it wouldn't be surprising if it got installed incorrectly.

Thanks for your photo sequence, farlymac. I'm about to dismantle the same area, and it is very debatable whether I would have realised that that pinion screw is a left-hand thread before I succeeded in shearing it!

You're welcome, Steve. A light touch is what it takes to determine which way to turn one you're not sure of.
