since i've gotten the iiia i've probably put about 20 rolls of film through it...great little cam, despite its quirks...i've really fallen for the look of the summar as well...i have apparently lucked out and have gotten a version that doesn't flare very much...i've abused it but it's pretty flare resistent...strange....

Russ, I really liked the Summar I had years ago. I noticed you were looking for a Summar lens hood over at photonet. (I quite liked my joke about using the same hood you use in Wintar.)

thanks....does anyone know much about summars? i've tried two versions and the current one i have is almost like a different lens...it's pretty sharp closed down and doesn't flare a whole lot...i don't think it's coated...it doesn't have a blue tint...the iris is hexagonal

it's different from the last one i borrowed in that it has a notched aperture ring with a little mettal protrusion to mark the aperture...i'll post a pic when i get home...

Pre-war Leitz lens, original equipment on IIIa's and some IIIb's. Part of the developmental path that led to the Summitar and eventually the Summicron. I think they were all originally uncoated, but could have been coated afterward.

Stephen Gandy's site has a one paragraph blurb on them and some commercially available listing books might be able to halp you pin down the exact manufacturing date based on the serial number.

Very nice shots. Ditto on the kite flyer. The lens seems quite flattering for portraits, too. I've been casting around for a summitar. I think I might broaden my net. Thanks for taking the time to share.

yes...the summar is no slouch...i actually have a summitar too that i won on ebay...its off for a CLA...i haven't had a chance to do a comprehensive comparison but the short time i had the summitar it performed very well...

i've had the chance to use two different summars and the differences between both were quite large in terms of flare control and sharpness...so that leads me to believe that there's quite a variation in the lenses....they're great for contrasty situations (high noon, spotlight) because they are low contrast lenses...i'm thinking a summar and trix/diafine would make a great night shooting combination...

they're great little lenses...and by little i mean little..you could probably carry two or three of them in a shirt pocket...definitely worth a look if you can find a good sample

thanks for the link....according to the serial # the lens was made in 1935...

Yes, I like my Summar. Like the Summitar, it's a variable contrast lens. More contrast as you stop it down, of course.

Mine is uncoated, and just absolutely water clear when you look through it. I've redone the black paint on the edge of the inner group of the front lens cell, but haven't pulled the rear lens cell to do the same. So missing paint is causing some flare.

It has not been at all flare-prone. I'm quite surprised by that. Of course, there are only 4 groups in the lens.

Mine has rather heavy wear to the chrome plating. Someone used this lens a lot, and wore off the plating with their hands. But, bless their hearts, they didn't clean the front element to death. It came with the ring from a Gelbfilter 2 (Yellow filter 2) on it, but no glass in it. It was stuck on firmly. Perhaps it spent the majority of its life with that filter on, protecting the front glass.

Folks speculate that camera gear with lots of cosmetic wear gets that way because it was a top-notch specimen, that someone was really happy with. Maybe this is a better than average Summar.

I don't think that there were any significant changes in the Summar's optical design. The mechanics changed quite a few times in the rather short production span, especially the iris ring.

I'd like to have a proper hood for it. But I will mostly use it on a Canon IV-SB2, and the different viewfinder arrangement on this doesn't really match the perforated Leica hoods for the Summar and Summitar. So, I may make my own, with different angles. But to do that, I need the dimensions of the Summar hood. Anyone have one they would like to measure for me?

russ,

did you ever find a yellow filter for this lens?
i have one made for it but can't remember what i paid for it, if you're interested.

joe

no luck with a yellow...though i did scrounge up a UV to protect the lens ( i lost the darn lens cap)...i would be interested in a yellow though

this one is a walz filter, silver rim that says 'made for summar' on it. it's a k2.

in good shape.

make an offer, if you like, and i'll try to find out how much i paid for it.

I like the kite shot too, and the painter; those two share some graphic similarities, and are a little startling seen side by side. :)

Very nice shots Russ, sometimes we look for the last MTF chart and tend to forget that in the end it's the final imagery that counts so a 'cheap' underrated lens (remember the stories of how these were sold at 10 bucks when the SLR age began) can deliver your favorite images.

I was looking for one some months ago, but all the ones I followed went for too much for me, and having in mind you may have the same variation as with FSU lenses, spending too much on one may not be a wise idea...

So, what does everyone thing is a fair price for a Summar. A clean one, not perfect, but clean. I have been looking (stop smiling guys) and the prices I have seen are very inconsistent.

I love my uncoated summar it is also a 1935. You definittly want to put a filter over it because the glass is very soft and very easy to scratch. I also just picked up a 90mm elmat uncoated prewar That I am digging its really interesting to shoot.
ENJOY
