Hi all,
I've been offered a IIIc with 'the step' and red blind. S/N puts it in 1941, deterioration of chrome confirms that period. No additional markings.
It's a genuine camera in average to poor condition and interesting for the red blind alone.
I know the background to these cameras and the effects of wartime shortages so this is not a straight 'What is it and what do they cost?' kind of post.
What I'm after is an opinion as to whether a red blind really adds value to a rather scruffy but functional IIIc or whether, in reality, there is none.
Opinions welcome,
Michael

If it had military markings it would probably add a little to the value but in reality there is no additional value.
Many of these cameras have had the original curtains replaced because of deterioration and cracking.

Gordon, nice to see that at least two of us appreciate REAL quality...mind you, after sustained immersion in sea water, mine is only good for breaking windows!

As to red blinds, I won't dig deep into my wallet.

My 1943 IIIc(with the 'steps'. extra screw over the right lug, etc) was found in very poor condition- no vulcanite, decomposed shutter, but clean lens and finder. I restored it and had red blinds installed in it.

In the end I declined the red blind IIIc and settled on a battered black II with a very clean viewfinder.
To me the black cameras grow older more gracefully. Exposed brass feels better than pitted chrome.
Don't worry, it will get used!
