For those of you who don't follow APUG, this thread started by Jin of this parish is a remarkable illustration of what kind of company the new Ilford Photo Harman Technology are shaping up to be.

I'll get excited if they do fire up glass plate production again

Have you read the thread through, William? You have the ear of an Ilford production director. Also, they DO make glass plates for special orders. Postcards appear to be the tip of a consumer led iceberg. Let's milk it while they're keen, eh?

Eh? I did read the thread, but I must have misread something as I thought from his talk about the difficulty of coating that they weren't going to do it.
Overall, I'm still trying to get used to Ilford products. I've used and liked FP4+ but I am not a fan of the Delta line so I'm kinda on the fence overall. I do want them to keep going and will buy what I will use, but I'm not sure how much of thier line fits me.
And back on topic, I'll admit the postcards could be alot of fun to contact print 4x5s onto.

Wow, that thread is incredible! Simon is so personable, his comments give me warm fuzzies. (RE: unfeasibility of Quickloads: "If you love a film, you love a film and even if its a bit more difficult you persist...")
God, there's hope! My next favorite iso 100 film after APX100 is Delta 100, and FP4 ain't bad, either.
Particularly interesting is his consideration of Rodinal. Reading between the lines, it looks like they've considered producing it, but they're just waiting to see if Agfa goes out of business. There's gotta be a market for that stuff; photographer's formulary is apparently producing a liquid kit...

Do I gather correctly that these Ilford postcards are a glossy photo paper of postcard size, and imprinted on the reverse with note and address areas? Never seen such a product offered before...

Will,
A lot of people do that with 8x10 in china (from what I read online and magzine).
I would be happy to contact print in 4x5 (someday... I am not developing my own film yet... ). You still need a lense on the projector rite?
Cheers

That is correct. It's the right size, on the heavier Portfolio paper and has printing on the back for the address. It comes in glossy and pearl. Should be available from suppliers in the new year. Postcard exchanges are a lot of fun.
Also note the possible introduction of a new film, Delta 25.

Absolutely, Doug. Here's a scan of the back for illustration. you can get rubber stamps to print this, but the heavier paper makes these very nice to use.

No enlarger is required for contact printing, you can contact print under a desk lamp if you choose to.
Thanks for the info, guys; an interesting product that I hope is successful for Ilford!

My cup runneth amok.
This is the best news I've heard all year.
I adore Ilford's glossy postcards; I"ve used maybe 400 or 500 of them since the mid-90s. They're the only resin-coated product I still print with. I love how stiff they are- similar feel to double-weight fibre paper. They seem to tone a little better than regular Ilford MG4, as well.
Been sadly working on the remnants of my last box over the past two months, and thinking up desperate schemes to hack Ilford MG4 fibre 5x7s to size in the dark. But who wants to wash a ####ing postcard for an hour?
I'm going to buy a few boxes of a hundred the minute I clap eyes on them in the store, just to send the dealer a message.

Is it necessary in some countries to have some kind of preprinted back?
In the US have sent (and received) hundreds of "Postcards" on regular double weight paper trimmed to 5" x 7" (sometimes 4" x 6"). Just write a note and address on the back. Never had a problem.

I wouldn't think so. Size is more of a constant specification.
I do like the backprint on Ilford's cards for one reason, though; my recipients are often totally bowled-over when they receive one of my cards for the first time- one with POSTCARD professionally printed on the back, and with their portrait or a scene they recognise on the front. Makes a terrific impression on the non-darkroom savvy world.
Many people I've sent them to over the years weren't even aware I had black & white fillum in the camera. Some didn't even know one could still shoot black & white. They freaked right oot.
Great little shock & awe tools, those cards, moreso in this increasingly digital age.

I was in town doing some Christmas shopping yesterday. While I was there I went in Jessops to buy a bulk roll of HP5+. As I usually do I checked out their paper shelf, what did I find lurking at the back of the shelf? (see attachment) Well it would have been a crime to leave it languishing wouldn't it?
I was in the DR until 1.30am making a few. Most are already addressed ready to go, I've got two spare to send out, I'll happily post them to the first two people to PM with addresses, so you can see for yourselves what Ilford's postcards are like.

Just ordered two packs of one-hundred postcards from http://www.secondhanddarkroom.co.uk. Have dealt with this firm before - very professional.
They should arrive in about a week or so (just waiting for Ilford to ship them out).
