Boy, this is driving me crazy!

I get wonderful results from my newly acquired Epson 2200 if I print a jpeg straight from the Windows image viewer, but if I fire up PSE 6 and follow what I believe is the recommended procedure for printing, I end up with weird color cats.

Here is a typical scenario:

-open an image, check colorspace and find out that's sRGB (standard for my digicam),
-"page setup" to set printer and paper size paramethers, hit PRINT.
-On the print menu, select PSE manages color, and pick the ICC I downloaded from Epson for my combination of ink and paper. The soft proof image shifts in tone slighly, but still lloks great.
-I check the printer driver settings and chose ICM > NO color management.
-Check paper and resolution, and ask for a preview.
-I hit the final Print button and the Epson driver shows me an image that has a terrible magenta cast.

I print it anyway and the magenta cast ends up being there, but not as bad as it was on the screen. Still, if I had chosen to let the printer manage the color, not PSE, and used the standard setting on the Color Control, I would have a better print.

Any idea about what might be goign on here? Why do the soft proofs look so different between PSE and the Epson driver? Why would the ICC from Epson (which I hear is quite good) has an inferior performance to the generic Coloro Control setting?

Any pointer will be truly appreciated!

PS- Before you ask, no, the monitor is not calibrated and profiled, but it should not be too terribly off the mark, at least based on some basic on screen calibration tests.
