I only use the built-in viewfinder for focusing and use a Kontur auxiliary finder for viewing. So, I taped a blue gel over the larger 'window' on the camera: it makes the rf rectangle and co-incident image stand out better. You can get a Rosco swatch book for $4 and use the others to gel your flash or make 3-d glasses. A simpler solution is to cut down a blue hanging folder index tab. If you want pretty, remove camera top and install gel inside. Git 'r done.

I was thinking of doing this but with a piece of unexposed developed BW film. It kind of has a bluish tint to it (depending on the type of film of course)

Could you also not put orange over the smaller RF opening on the front?

Vince- the orange gel would darken the RF patch.
ZF1- you need to use an 'optically flat' gel - one that gives a sharp, clear co-incident image.
