Improved digital sensor?

I came across a bit in PC World yesterday about a new Kodak sensor technology. Today I found this article in DPReview:

Am I reading this wrong or does this sensor trade color bit depth (or contrast) for overall sensitivity?

Is this a trade you would be willing to make? I might.

I remember hearing a report on NPR about this. It is supposed to make flash obsolete. That's a mighty claim. If there is actually a couple of stops improvement, or it just takes a large amount of noise out of the shadows and improves color balace in badly lit scenes, it'll be worthwhile. Time will tell if it lives up to its promises.

No digital, no trades. I prefer molecular sensor strips: Film!

My preference is for film as well, when I am not recording my vision of reality in a Moleskine with a fountain pen. Yet I use a computer all day.

I like my digital cameras, not so much as my film cameras, but they have their uses (especially my R-D1).

It seems that pace of advancement in digital sensor technology is really slow - no Moore's Law at work, but then the criteria for "improvement" are different. Foveon technology? - <YAWN> Bigger and bigger sensors? - double <yawn>

On the other hand, this development actually seems like a clever improvement. I am particularly interested in seeing what it can do for digital B/W. Faster speeds, more shadow detail? Sounds like rangefinder talk.

Camera shake is a hugh problem in P&S cameras caused by lack of proper viewfinders and the fact you have the camera waving out in space to compose.

The cure has been IS or VR or something similar. But the great minds have an even cheaper solution, screw up the sensors.

It get worse and worse.

this week I spent some 50 Euro on photography, got caught cold and was conscripted to shoot a gig by Dante Thomas. I was on my way home from work and just had the G2 and 28 and 45 and three rolls Superia 200 with me and the TLA200 flash 🙂

Development, 4x6 prints and CDs for 45 Euro + 9 Euro for new films :bang:

Was it worth it? Probably not. Have they put up the important pictures which can't wait? No!
This way I'll never be able to buy a digital rangefinder 🙂

Come to think of it, I've been told this was the first time one of Dantes gigs was shot on film and his manager thinks I'm a really cool frood.
