I learned today of the death of Cornell Capa. He was my teacher and a friend and was one of the most decent and caring men I ever knew.
Capa was a photojournalist who never lost sight of his mission to produce as he wrote, "images in which genuine human feeling predominates over commercial cynicism or disinterested formalism."
He believed deeply in the "concerned photographer" who sought to portray human its in all it glory and pain. Through the creation of the International Center of Photography in New York, he sought to present, strengthen and support the work of photojournalists in an increasingly TV (and now web oriented) world.
I learned from Cornell that it hardly mattered what camera a photographer used. When students would ask what lens was used for a particular image, Cornell would grimace a little and say, "Who cares!, Look at the picture." A lesson we should all remember.
What he tried to teach was that what matters is the heart and the passion of the photographer.
Cornell Capa had a great heart and his passion for photography ran deep. Those of us who loved him will miss him very much.
