Interesting FSU on E-Bay

It`s called a "Zarya" which the owner calls is a Zorki without a rangefinder but this one is clearly a FED (logo on back) and comes with a relatively modern solid Industar (looks like the 26) .... can see why this camera didn`t sell, 50mm lenses are hard to scale focus reliably, if it had a 21mm finder I could understand it , but then I guess that people weren`t trying for 20X 16 prints back then ;-)

Last winter, at a small railway station near Minsk, Belarus I've seen a boy of maybe 7 years old clicking around with Zarya. In his hands it actually looked huge 🙂

Yes, the Zarya is based on a FED-2, see here.

Zarya is just a cheaper version of fed 2 (without a rangefinder). I do not see any value in it other than another addition to your collection.

That's exactly what I thought when I was tempted by one going cheap a while ago - "that'll help complete the collection". Then I remembered I don't have a collection, I only have cameras I use 🙄

I have a friend who ordered one and used it to shoot. It came with an I-50 f/3,5. Moderate-aperture lenses are not really hard to zone-focus, and seeing the photos shot with it showed a huge success rate. There were western cameras which took the same approach- think of the Kodak non-RF, prewar Ektar, the various Kodak Pony models, or even the Leica standard! 🙂

And I thought the "Cut down" Mir was the budget model ;-) .... The Zarya could be an Ideal cheap alternative to a Bessa L for shooting with the CV 12 and 15mm lenses I guess (The L being a camera without a Vfinder at all), of course the bessa has TTL metering if little else but at least the Zarya is interesting .. though with 4Ks going for less than £15 why bother except to complete a FED collection

Oh that's right , there's no cure for FSU GAS 🙁 Your doomed Adam , But rest easy in the knowledge that you will probably be putting 4 or 5 Russian kids through college 😀 😀 😀

LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!! ...... I`m cured, I have my 4 and my C "Festival" and apart from maybe a FED2 with its ultra long rangefinder base, I can`t see that FAS (FSU version of GAS) will effect me, I don`t need a Zorki-1 or FED-1 as I have the Leica they copied and I don`t need a FED3 (as it`s a Zorki-4 clone) or want a FED-4 or 5 (because, err, well because they`re a FED4/5 ;-) .. A kiev may have been interesting if it didn`t take Alien lenses but they never made one in L39 mount so that`s those out of the equasion and FED SLRs are out because you can get a proper Spotmatic for under £20 and I have my F3 anyway 🙂..

I have a Zarya and I like it. It came with some pin holes in one of the shutter curtains so I patched it up with liquid rubber. I have put a few rolls through it and have been happy with the results. Zone focusing is easy, especially with a 35mm lens, and on a bright sunny day even people pictures came out fine. It definitely feels tinnier than a FED2 but I am not afraid to put it in my coat pocket without a case, and with the collapsable 50/3.5 it is quite small. Of all the FSU cameras I have, this one has the least things that can go wrong. 🙂
