Check the X100 forum. Moribund. Have people decided to do the sensible thing and wait for real news? Or has everyone already projected every fantasy they wanted onto the camera?

The best camera is one that still works!
It was kind of predictable IMO ... opposite swing of the pendulum and all that!

Those feeding frenzy threads are definitely not RFF's finest moments.

First of all, it was suspicious from the start. A 6 month leeway on an announcement? That gives plenty of time for other players to respond, plus we really have no idea how it would perform, etc. Nonetheless Fuji certainly struck a chord with its design and potential.

Fuji did something similar with the model known outside Japan as the Bessa III, didn't they? The first time it was shown was only as a mock-up behind glass, and the announcement when it came was months in advance of the production release, with enormous speculation about price and function.

Even though I'm definitely not in the market for such a camera it's very easy to get swept along with these threads ... by the time it reached fifteen hundred or so posts I started to feel a little dirty and went back through the thread and deleted all my entries!

I think all the hysteria was generated by the fact that some manufacturer was possibly going to produce a digital camera that appeals to the more traditional among us. That is other than Leica and at a somewhat more affordable price. Now there is a long pause to see if it meets expectations when actually on the retailers shelves. If it meets expectations lets hope it also has appeal to the general photographic public as well as traditionalists. So yes the sensible thing to do id just wait and see.

There's only so much to discuss unless there's any more information.. I expect things to pick up again as soon as review copies start being shipped around.
Hysteria does not seem appropriate here, as it has negative connotations. If any Leica owners fling themselves off of bridges because of the X100, I'll be glad to agree that Hysteria ensued! If they fling their M9's, be sure to let me know so I can catch it. I'll have to make a nice M9 net to catch it. "Fling your camera at the Large Red Dot!"
A number of people are excited about the prospects of this new camera, and if Fuji delivers on that promise- it will be very popular. For now, we will have to wait for the production version to be demonstrated and delivery time to be announced.

Why use the word 'hysteria' when people are excited? Is it because it is the wrong company who make people excited?
And hopefully I can join you under the bridge and catch the M9s. If we are lucky they are disgusted by themselves for buying the X100 and will throw them in the same go

What else was supposed to have happened? Based on the specifications, there really is a lot to be excited about. But then, based on the specifications, there's not much more to say than "why yes, I am excited" and then move on. There's no new news, so there's no new discussion about a product that doesn't yet exist.

One if the definitions of 'hysteria' is 'unhealthy emotion or excitement'. Of course, definitions of 'unhealthy' vary, but the statements of those who deleted their contributions suggest to me that my usage was not too far out. Excitement? Of course: it looks like a very interesting camera. A whole new forum filled with enormous threads, consisting in many cases of overheated speculation or fantasy-projection? No, I think I'll stick with the word 'hysteria'.

It's just normal. You don't expect people to get excited for 6 months...

The wrong company? Who would be the right company?
PLEASE tell me I'm wrong and this isn't going to deteriorate into another Leica-bashing/Leica-owner-bashing thread.

No, let's call a bunch of forum contributors 'hysterical' instead

Sorry that was not the intention. I was just asking: Why are people 'hysterical' when they are excited about the x100?

Which was not actually what I was doing. Those few who are congenitally hysterical will probably go on that way. Those who indulged, briefly, in hysterical behaviour, or who watched others indulge in it, understood what I meant. Someone used the term 'feeding frenzy', which summed it up pretty well.
What I was drawing attention to in this thread was that a more rational approach, when the camera was announced, would have been "Yes, looks interesting, can't wait to see one." But we got rather more than that.
As others have said, sure, not much remains to be said until we see a working camera. My point was more along the lines of wondering why so much was said in the first place.

Thanks! See my post above about my intention. As I've said in a couple of posts, excitement is entirely reasonable. But look at the number of threads and posts, and the creation of an entire new forum, and surely you must agree that some of the excitement was, shall we say, overheated.

Fair enough. I guess that statement would be better served without the 'hysteria' attached. Maybe it would be better with 'Interesting how the excitement have cooled down'
Then again, I guess this discussion would not be so interesting then.
