interesting story about famous Dorothea Lange depression photo

Bill Ganzel's Dust Bowl Descent has a photo of Florence Thompson and the three daughters in the famous photo, taken in 1979. That's a book worth having, if you value the FSA photographs (as I do).
 
Lange took more than one photograph of the women. I also believe that it was cropped a bit, too.

If you search on-line you can find all eight frames that Dorothea Lange shot. It is interesting to see how she began shooting and ended up with this one.

Also, I remember this had some artistic retouching to remove a minor but distracting element. That was the sort of thing that is strictly not allowed in today's concern about manipulated photos.

It almost got her fired then. You can also find comparisons of the retouched and un-retouched photos online.
