Hello All,

I am new to this forum and would like to introduce myself. You will probably see my name pop-up in various threads with questions and remarks.

I'm Magnus, live in Münich, southern Germany and am becoming a genuine dedicated hobby photographer. I started off using a wide range of fully automatic photo equipment, cameras, lenses of all sorts and qualities, the biggest zoom was to small for me, not that I utilized it at all but thought it was fun to have. I made pictures of my wife, my kids, mother in law, the cats..... you know basic sort of family photography, gradually moved on to more "intersting" subjects such as the corner shop, the local theatre, multiple sunrises and sunsets and to be truthfull, at the time I shot them I found the results great and based on that bought another lens, or filter, or flash .... I found myself lugging a huge lowepro bag with kilos of "plastic" or whatever modern camera manufacturers call the stuff their bodies and lenses are made of ... I ventured into digital, only for a while, for this was my turnaround period, shooting 2000 pictures a week and having a hard time finding 2 acceptable shots... Anyway for some time I'v discovered Equipment minimalism and photographic pleasure maximalism. I sold all my Nikon stuff, really all of it and bought a mint condition Leicaflex SL2 with a summilux 35mm lens as well as a beaten down Hassleblad 500 C/M with an 80mm standard lens. I have been using this equipment now for over a year and reall enjoy the total photography thing... standard lenses have proved to be great quality and quite a challenge to use, makes you think of what you shoot and how you shoot it ....

I shoot both B/W and color slides (4 backs on my Hassleblad) and decide based upon the subject I want to take pictures of. I use grey cards and a handheld light meter, I find the total routine fantastic.

I couldn't get rid of my Conatx G2 kit with 21, 28, 45 and 90 lenses, people wanted to purchase it but at the last moment I always reconsidered, so I use that too mainly for the sort of family shots I wrote about in the beginning.

Anyway thats me, and I hope to gain from joining this forum.... up to a point that I will be knowledgable enough to pass on information and have others gain ....

Well sorry for the lenght of this thread .....

Anyway cheers all .....

Welcome Magnus. You are among enthusiasts here who enjoy using classic equipment, as well as the newer equipment that has come to our little niche market. It is nice to have another member in the group.

Well, I am sure that you have lurked long enough to get used to us by now, so let me add right away that a Leica M2 or M3 would really go well with that SL2.

Brian... I have to confess that although being minimalistic in my needs (trying to at least) I love photographic equipment, quality equipment that is... I have a Mamiya C33 (defect) but just the shere feeling of the body .. almost erotic.
Yes I have been trying to become good friends with an M2 or M4, I google-eye them whenever I see one, I stick my nose against shop windows and stand there for 15 minutes or so.... deep at heart I know the expense would be injustified, but nevertheless..... It is actually next on my list.
I only buy this old stuff when it's (technically)perfect, it also needs to come with original packaging finding an M2 or M3 in this state is not easy when on a budget ....

LOL Magnus I also had the "Lowepro" experience but with a very extensive Nikon F3 kit that weighed a ton! I have managed to divest myself of most of it, gave some to one of my kids, and got myself a (small) Domke bag and a Leica outfit. And I am enjoying my photography so much more too!

Welcome (actually I've already said that in another thread) and you will find lots of new friends here - we have a few German members too - you can organize a shoot! 🙂

Boxed Leica M2. That would be beautiful.

For whatever reason, I do not obsess over the cosmetic condition of the Leica M's that I have picked up. I have mint cameras (Two near Mint Nikon SP's and others), boxed cameras, but also a lot of users. The Leica's are functionally perfect, but not so cosmetically. They are just so nice to handle, the cosmetics do not seem to matter as much. The Nikon SP is a beautiful camera, with lines like a Fast Navy Cruiser. But it does not handle as nice as the M3, or M2.

Cosmetics are not important to me either, but they have to be genuine and technically perfect.
Thing I worry about with M2 and M3's is the shutter, apparantly quite a lot of "misses" here, not a big problem you can always have them adjusted/fixed but this would raise the cost subsatantially.
Lenses (period ones) and fungus, shutters and particles between the lenses is also a problem, there are however good 40-50 year old lenses to be found, but it's a lot of Haystack to cover. But I see this search part as part of the fun, and until now I have always found what I wanted, in the condition I wanted (without having to beat up elderly citizans....joke!!)

Magnus..feel free to get auction 6/lot 108 for me. M3 black paint. Beautiful.
Oh, welcome to the forum!
