Dear All,

You are cordially invited to the new flickr group: M-mount (Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander).

http://www.flickr.com/groups/m-mount/

The group is intended to showcase excellent photos by M-mount lenses and provide users of M-mount cameras a systematic way of comparing some of the most advanced optics available to photography. The idea is to create a repository of well organized images taken with M-mount lenses. Photos may be taken with a film or digital body. All that really matters is the lens.

The group is organized by tagging the photos with an 'official' M-mount group tag. This method allows that all the photos taken with a particular lens can be viewed at a glance by clicking on the appropriate link. The pool is maintained by the fdbot which cleans it twice daily from inappropriately tagged photos. If your photo is removed, please feel free to resubmit by using the official tag.

The success of this group really rests upon the number of photo contributions made so we warmly invite for submission all of your photos taken with a particular M-mount lens. Our hope is that with time the M-mount group will be a point of reference for all M-mount lens users, be it Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander, Konica, Minolta, Rollei etc.

The group is currently open only for M-mount lenses (so, LTM lenses are not admissible for the time being) but we are open to the opportunity of adding tags for those lenses as well in the future.

Regards,

Let me take this opportunity to say a big thanks to my friend Robert (Honus) for all the work he did for the group.

Thanks Robert 🙂

Not to be a pedant (I love/hate that term), but I just want to clarify something: must you (i.e. one, not *you* you personally) tag the photo with "M-mount" prior to sending it to the group, or does the fdbot do the tagging for you?

I'm confused because you said that the group is organized by tagging the photos, but the fdbot will clean those tagged improperly. So is the organization done by the group, or is the sole responsibility of the owner of the photograph prior to posting it to the group.

Clear as mud? 😱

No worries Gabriel - it does sound a little complicated but once you do it once it's clear like day.

All you have to do is cut the appropriate tag (the one that names the lens used for the photo) from the so-called 'official' tag list and paste it alongside the other tags next to your photo. No need to add anywhere the 'M-mount' description.

BTW one of the resources we used for the formation of the 'official' tag list was Stephen Gandy's Cameraquest site - so, many thanks to him too for offering this very valuable resource. N.B. Our 'official' tags are different from the nomenclature used in either Puts' or Gandy's site. Please do use the correct tags, otherwise the fdbot software will delete them Needless to say, any mistakes or ommissions from the list are of our doing. (And I 'd appreciate it very much if the members alerted us to any such glitches).

There is no content restriction in the photos you post - just the tag requirement so that photos are categorized in the correct fashion.

Thanks for joining - please do post!

I just wanted to join in with Alkis and invite interested members of RFF to participate in the Flickr M-mount group. It has a chance to become a valuable resource by building a library of images catagorized by lens type.

When Alkis mentioned the idea to me I thought it was brilliant. He has done a wonderful job of conceiving and executing the idea. I was happy to provide what little assistance he needed to complete it. In less than a day we already have over 70 members and over 150 images.

I am starting to feel the pangs of 28mm GAS coming on :bang: - and I would love to compare images from all the Elmarits, the Summicron, the Biogon and the Hexanon. Sean Reid's 28mm review was very helpful, but it would be great to supplement it with images of various subject matter, light quality, dof, etc.

A whole lot of C/V lens tags are missing. I have the 75mm 2.4 Color Heliar and I don't see it in the tags list.

Wayne,

thanks for noticing the omission. I 'd greatly appreciate it if you would let me know what other CV lens tags we are missing (or alternative, if you could direct me to some source for these lenses). For the time being we only cater for M-mount lenses without adapter; if the experiment takes off then we could add the numerous LTM lenses soon after.

Many Thanks,

tags.

I need to buy a CV camera so I can actually take part in the forum!

George,

I 'd honestly squeeze in a 'Bronica rf 645' tag for you if I could. Maaaaaybe when no one's watching 😉

🙂

This is long overdo for M-mount lenses. I'm a member of the Nikkor group on Flickr, and that group has proven that this same format can be very successful and incredibly useful. Inspired by that group many people have wondered aloud (here) that it would be great to have this same setup for M-moount lenses. My kudos to Robert and Alkis for stepping up and doing this. It's great!.

Thanks, guys!

Is this so different from the three range finder groups allready on Flickr? I guess these cameras could be LTM or Nikon or *gasp* Canon- but OK I'll join and drop a ton of photos into the cue : )

yes. very much so. Once, populated with images, you could find all images made with a particular M-mount lens, by simply clicking on the tag for that lens on the groups home page. A similar effort was made here (by Wayne I think), with the lens/image threads. A great setup for GAS-infected gearheads!

🙂

Thanks for doing this. I don't have any leica glass but I'll sure enjoy learning about the character of these lenses. Maybe one day...
