Supposedly untouched samples. Please comment on the images and what this may mean to future work (your own or others). I hope we can leave the Film/Digital Holy War business to other threads.

Quite frankly I am impressed and surprised at the complexity of the IQ. Much less plastic and P&S looking than expected. It looks more like a mid/advanced level pocket P&S camera than a phone. When will we see RAW available in a Smartphone? It seems like apple is the natural choice considering the nearly universal RAW compatibility of iPhoto, Aperture..etc..

These do look better than I would have expected. During on of the presentations they mentioned it was a 5 element lens design and F2.5. They showed a slide where the new element was added exactly in the middle.... Whether that is marketing just trying to make a point or if this was really where the new element was place, who knowns....

I have a 3GS now, while the pictures are just ok, my friends 4g is better and these look better yet. The old Sony camera phone from about 3 or 4 years ago blew my 3G out of the water whenu compared the images.

I have not looked at the other camera phones for a while, what do others think?

Not bad, but sony and nokia have better cameras on their phones. I too have a 3gs and the images are very poor so a big improvement on that. They still look like $80 point and shoot camera shots though. I still really want one :D

The iPhone 4 camera is very good - the iPhone 4s camera looks to be better again. They noted that with the increase in megapixels they also increased the light collecting micro lenses and pixel size itself.

However, when it comes to phone cameras, no one beats Nokia. They've got Zeiss lenses, large and high megapixel sensors.

Nokia may have Zeiss lenses (and Jari on flickr does brilliant work,) but they don't have iOS. That's the significance.

Btw. The shot of the squirrel looks better than your average cheap p&s. definitely looks better than anything my 3GS iPhone camera can produce.

Nokia, Sony, Zeiss...??

I have to be honest I've never checked out any other phone/camera as an option. The iPhone is a phone and computer tool before camera. These images make it look like the camera may become a real tool also. My phone iPhone 4 was great. It sits in an evidence room since being stolen (and recovered) as a result I've been with my 2007 iPhone classic. So, I ordered a 4s this morning. Finding these images is nice. I mean heck.... These are better than a lot of the early Fuji x100 images ;) (ducks for cover).

They're definitely trying to milk the 'bokeh' in those photos. I prefer the color balance to most DSLRS tbh..

I was pretty impressed with the pictures. For a phone, you can't ask for much more.

I preordered a 4S last night. Can't wait to get it!

It would be great if somebody came out with an APP that would allow for some manual override.

I'd really like that too.

I killed my 3gs a couple weeks ago trying to change the battery. I was quite fond of that camera. I can't wait for next friday!

Very good. It is a big attraction of the 4S. The 4 is in between. I miss my 3GS - the pictures had a certain character.

Sold my digital Canon rig on the bay last week
and replaced it with the iPhone 4S -- due to arrive
on Thursday. "The best camera is the one you have
with you." I passed on the 4 camera waiting for a
better upgrade, though the iPhone 4 cam proved to
be excellent, and this one will make me very happy.
