Hi all - I am new to RFF - and while I am finding it immensely enjoyable I am not sure I know what I am doing. Somebody please re-direct me if this is in the wrong place.

I work on a Mac and my problem [among several] is with IPhoto. Have recently upgraded 0XS twice and now find IPhoto is corrupted. That is, though I can see my thumbnails, I cannot open, move, edit or manipulate them anything prior to the upgrades. Some three thousand of them! But not to get excited, many were pix of vintage books and no big deal - can be done again. But a trip to London and two to Bermuda were also in there. That hurts. By the way, anything put there since the upgrade is fine.

And yes, I have learned a back-up lesson. Luckily had a bunch of stuff hosted on Photobucket.

A quick visit to the IPhoto user's board tells me the situation is likely hopeless.

I am hoping someone here knows better.

My thanks in advance for any direction from the generous pros here.

I rather figured it was a dead end, but guess i was trying to keep hope alive.

Thanks for your answers, sad tho' they were. It was good of you to take the time.

Regards,
Shirley

Usually the files are still there, but the repository file is corrupted. I would suggest you create a new library, and have it scan for your images. If that doesn't work get it looked at by an Apple professional at the store. Good luck

Don't give up as yet!

Have you located your iPhoto library? It's usually within Pictures, but there's always a possibility if you copy the photos over to another folder or drive and open them within another programme that the files will be OK

Before giving up, it has to be worth a drive to your local Genius Bar? I have personally lost photos, but that has been due to a corrupt drive (and backup which I shoulda known was faulty). There could always be a fault with the catalogue file and not the images themselves.

This link should help show you how to find and open the images within the iPhoto finder. The simplest way to to Control Click onto the Iphoto Library, and this should actually show you the contents, which you can then simply open with another application.

Let us know how you get on!

... without running Time Machine as a backup I suspect there is no way back, it's a tough way to learn the backup lesson ... you have my sympathy

I'm guessing (hoping) that the photos are still fine. I don't use it very much at all, but this might help.

1. Find your library. Mine is in ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
2. Right click or control-click on it and select "Show Package Contents"
3. In the new window, find the 'Originals' folder
4. Copy that to your Desktop. I think all of your original photos are in that file.

You can also try searching in the iPhoto Library for files of the 'image' type. That might pick up a couple more files.

That being said, I might google 'corrupt iPhoto library' and find someone who has actually dealt with this problem.

This is excellent advice and there is a good chance it will work.

If you o recover your photos and start over with IPhoto, set things up in the beginning (preferences) so iPhoto leaves your image file directory structures intact.

wow guys - I almost did not return here, not wanting to wallow in despair. How happy I came back. Thank you one and all for your generosity and your help, which I much appreciate. And now, thanks to you I have some things to try which will keep hope alive.

GOD LOVE THE WHOLE LOT OF YOU. I certainly do!
