IR film in a Keiv 4a

This is my first foray into Infra Red and I just happened to select a Kiev 4a as my test vehicle. Could have used many other systems I have, (Olympus, Pentax and other) but went for the gusto. It's all or nothing.

Exposure readings are at best hit or miss even when using my Gossen Luna Pro. Overall some great images. Will post to my gallery the other images.

Enjoy,

I have a couple of rolls of B&W IR film that I need to shoot before it expires and 2 Kiev 4a's.

Very interesting, and nice too. What made you try it?

I always liked the image feel that IR gave. When I heard that Kodak HIE was dropped I felt I'd better get some and play with it while I can.

Shooting IR in a Kiev is the ultimate test for light leaks. If your Kiev is light tight, go for it. I gives you yet another reason to go out and shoot film.

I've heard this.
So far I haven't noticed any light leaks in either of my 4a's but then I haven't shot IR yet. Maybe tomorrow

what was your setup on this shot? What film, filter, exposure, etc?

I have beem using Rollei IR400 with good results, but I miss HIE.

Here's the setup:

Kiev 4a (naturally!), Jupiter 12 with Red 25 filter. Exposed for ASA400 and developed in ID-11 1:1 at 13 minutes @ 20C. For the most part a lot of the images were very very thin but a small handful came out with good negative density. Exposure was 1/500 @ f8 or f11. Next roll I run I will rate at ASA200. I understand that exposure meters are not sensitive to IR and thus are prone to give readings that are erroneous. What the hell, bracket like crazy and blast away!

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Russ

Several years ago I shot quiet a bit of IR. I always rated it at asa200 with a 25 red filter and would bracket. I found most of my shots worked best at 125 or 250 at f/5.6-11.

When focusing do you shoot with the rf image focused or do you turn the ring slightly?
A lot of lens have an IR focus mark but not my J-12.

Since this was my first roll of IR my initial suspicions are leaning towards comfirming your ratings. Next roll will be at ASS200 which should drop the speed down a notch to 250 at f5.6-f11.

Yes, when focusing I turn the focus ring a little bit to accomodate IR. Not sure if that is correct method but what the heck mostly everything is at hyperfocal or inifinity. Mind you with apertures at the f8-11 range I should just set the lens on infinity and blast away.

Interesting discussions!

Welcome..

I shoot IR at 200 asa with a red filter and bracket..
You will need to load and unload in subdued light in fact I would recommend doing so before leaving home and after returning...never in bright light..

One suggestion that will make loading easier is to go to fedka.com and order a Kiev dual cylinder cassette at $2.99 ea. Ask if he can supply the 2 slot take-up spool with it unless you already have it.

To properly use it push the film leader through one slot and then through the other. Reassemble the cassette and turn to close.

To load place the cassette into the chamber and make sure the tab on the cassette is in the groove in the film chamber. This locks the cassette into the proper alignment. Next slightly pull the film and align the sprocket with the sprocket holes in the film and place the film cassette into its side of the chamber and turn the rewind knob to tension the film slightly.

Replace the back and lock. The locking key will open the cassette and close it when you open the back.

Advance the film and fire the shutter. Advance one more time and set counter to "0" then fire the shutter. You are now ready. :)

Ok i went to search for it here:
http://www.fedka.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=417

So this prevents leaks to a certain extend by hiding the film inside the cassette?

I haven't use film for a long time...so pls do be patient with me if i ask some dumb questions.

also i have not recevied my kiev yet...but i do hope to be able to shoot some IR with it. im thinking if i should go ahead and take the plunge with a J12 35mm, as i'm quite a WA kinda guy.

Edit:
i just stumbled upon this page: http://www.keithberry.telinco.co.uk/kiev4man.htm
i believe the cassette doesn't work for me as i ordered a Kiev 4am ......blah!

Yes and no... It can prevent light leaking but if the door seal at the top is leaking you will get exposure damage to the film between the film cassette and take-up cassette.

We all started at the beginning and asked questions too.

By all means get the J-12. It's an outstanding lens..

The 4am can't use the cassette since it has a built-in take-up spool.
