howdy fellow RFFr's & R-D1 shooters... I am hoping to do a few IR pics this weekend, and was just wondering if anyone has a specific recommendation on IR filters, I have a nokton classic 40 1.4, and might be getting a 21 F4, would rather get a 15, but the whole filter ring thing on it is kind of a bummer...

On another subject, I'm probably gonna get a hot mirror filter as well, for the standard shots. I have noticed the AA filter is pretty weak, and lets through too much IR. To be honest the R-D1 reminds me a lot, in terms IR reception, as the nikon D1. That nikon has the best IR response of the bunch, although much older. So Any advice on which brand...

Can't help you w/your 1st question, but as to the 2nd, the B+W 486 UV/IR cut filters I bought to use w/my M8 work well w/the R-D1, too, as you might expect.

Ivan,
I've been using a Hoya R72 for infrared work. I have one filter in the 52mm size and use step-up adapters for my other lenses.

Take care,
Michael

Leica UV/IR and B+W 486 filters may cause ghost images in low light from time to time but they don't seem to alter the color rendition.
No cyan shift with 28, 35, 40 & 50mm Leica lenses so far.
Below Leica filter with Elmarit asph 28/2.8, f/8, 400 iso, FF and 100% crop.

I bought a 77mm Heliopan Digital Filter which I use on every lens from the 12mm up (via a vented adaptor called a Filter View). I have shot in every imaginable sort of light and haven't gotten any ghosts or flare. This is similar to my experience with the B+W "MRC" filters. I used to get a lot of ghosts and flare with the non-MRC filters which it appears that's what the 486's and Leica's are more like.

Edit: After a couple months experiment, those filters do cause oversaturated greens in grass and foliage to a point where they tend to remain unused in my bag.
