I believe that the filter he is using should be one like the Hoya R72 IR filter. This is one of the most common IR filters used for IR photography with digital cameras as it is relatively cheap and is readily available.

A deep red would give some effect if you have one to hand for B&W shooting.

I use the Hoya R72 filter on my RD1 for IR photos. The B&H link is HERE. I bought mine elsewhere, but I got it in size 52mm. That is the largest size of my current bunch of lenses, and I use step down rings.
There is an older thread on the forum that got me interested in doing IR on the RD1. The link is HERE.

The gent who's photos you were checking is I.
The filter I use was made for me by the kind and friendly Vivek Iyer. He used the filter you can find here: http://www.edmundoptics.com/onlinecatalog/DisplayProduct.cfm?productid=1918 .
He told me that an equivalent filter would be a 715nm IR filter.
Good luck!

HAHAH, awesome man. I really like your snaps. Good work and great tones. Can Vivek Iyer make me one of these filters with the same materials?
Thanks

You can ask him. He's mostly on P.net. But he made it as a thank-you gift for my lending him my R-D1 for some IR and UV experimenting. It got me into IR.
I don't think it's too difficult to make it yourself, though. All you need is an old screw-in filter with the glass removed. Or you can use one of those filter sliding systems. The material can be bought online from the link. How's that for easy DIY?

I have used the Hoya R72 on my other digital cameras for IR photography. It seems to work just fine on my R-D1s too. Examples...
