is flare making a comeback ?

I have recently started seeing tv adverts with flare-y windows and opened doors. And I wonder to myself, is it me or are old lens making a comeback ?

Is it me or are we seeing more lens flare in the media now ? I am not talking about star trek lens flare (circular types) but more of white glow from the windows type of flare.

Maybe modern lens are so clinically close to perfect, ie. excellent sharpness, low distortion, and super flare suppressed, that something different is good ?
