It looks like a genuine Jupiter 8

Oh my god it is!!!!

Oh my god it is!!!!

I have one, and it is a Jupiter 8 let me tell you. The finish, construction, etc,,,,. I would not touch it. In fact, for that money, I would save up and get a used 50mm Summicron or a new Zeiss 50mm ZM Planar. DO NOT BUY!!!!

For $30 or so yes, but not that price!!!!

The number corresponds to an uncoated 50/2 Sonnar in Contax mount produced in 1939, and the beauty ring looks a lot like a Zeiss product. Hard to tell from the pictures if the lens is coated or not, but I do see a slight purple tinge toward the edge of the front element in one of the pictures. Usually the J8 has a bright purple coating and if this is a J8, it has a different, less obvious coating. Maybe coated, maybe not. The lens barrel certainly looks Russian.

It could be a genuine Zeiss lens remounted in a J8 barrel, or it might be a Jupiter- only way to tell would be to take it apart, and of course you would have to buy the lens to do so. I would steer clear

But then the seller claims that the lens takes E39 filters.
Don't all Jupiter-8s take 40.5mm filters?

Cheers,
Uwe

It could be a conversion, like some of the ones that I have done.

It's hard to tell until you take the optics module out of the mount.

Still too much money.

For some reason, the Wartime Contax Mount 5cm f2 "T" lenses get to keep their Winged aperture rings. The prewar rings are larger diameter and do not fit in a J8 mount.
