I bought an OM-1 today! I am now surely evil.

The transition began with me trying to complete my film kit. I had a Minolta Autocord and an oly 35rc. The Autocord for medium format stuff obviously, and the RC for convenient snaps in color. So I wanted to fill in a hole for a deticated 35mm black and white shooter. I thought the 35SP would fill that hole in my Domke F6, but the camera's been a nightmare in more ways than one. This thread goes into more detail.

Sure it looks pretty, but even if the camera was totally fixed, I had a hard time looking through the viewfinder, and I hate hate hate how it meters. I sent it back to be repaired again (at no charge this time) and once it gets back it'll be for sale.

Still, I liked the lens on it. So I got to thinking about SLRs.

I have a Minolta SRT 200. I don't use it. It's extrmely loud and has a vicious mirror slap you can feel through the camera. The fact that it doesn't have MLU especially sucks. Still, I keep it around because it belonged to my grandfather.

So I went to OC Camera - Ken Rockwell's most favorite place in the whole wide world now apparently (not that I'm not putting the place down, it has a TON of used equipment at good prices).

I was curious about the OM 1 and as it so happened they had one. I was shocked at how compact the camera was, light too! But the real shocker came when I hit the shutter... what a quiet snap! Seriously! Perhaps the quietest click I've ever heard on an SLR.

I got $20 off the camera because I didn't want the shoe, and so they tossed it on an OM 2 they also had for sale. Looks like I will need to replace the light seals but I think that's done easily enough.

Can't wait to try it out. I think I'll toss in some Arista Premium (trix) at 1600 for a little dinnerparty I'm going to tonight.

Neat camera. Those things are tiny for slr's. I've been temped more than once to sell my Minolta cameras to pick up one of these Oly OM's.

So what is the sin? Lying to yourself about no more cameras for awhile because your saving up for your wedding or actually buying the camera? This is a sin I think we are all guilty of.;) Nice purchase. Now you got to buy zuiko lenses for it.:D

As penance you must shoot five rolls (36 exposures each) of Tri-X and develop them yourself in D76.

I say: two Hail Marys and a brick of Tri-X. And try to behave through the next month of Sundays. ;)

Seriously, you'll have fun with that particular Evil SLR. I rarely touch the stuff anymore, but for certain purposes I still have this setup:

Pure, unadulterated Evil.

But I only sin with it on a tripod/monopod. Any special dispensation for that?

Welcome to the brother/sisterhood of the "blessed light."

The black version will soon visit you in your sleep. Have a nice dream.

Evil ... no! ~ Astute choice ... definitely! :)

My black OM-1 is currently in the hands of Camtech (I hope) getting a CLA and a couple of little problems fixed. Meanwhile I'm forced to use my silver OM-1 or possibly my silver OM-2 ... lifes so hard!

I love my OM's ... whoops! (serious danger of another repetitive rant coming on!) :p

Evil incarnate! Red Olympi from Planet 10 via the Eight Dimension! :)
Planet 10 (X)? They make Fred's (nikonwebmaster) very good good bike, too!

"Where are we going?"

"To The Planet 10!"

"When are we going?"

"Real soon!
"

Any good Buckaroo knows this. ;)

Good choice! You won't be disappointed. I have a ton of OM kit (including an OM-1n) and wouldn't part with it for the world ...

Richard

SLR is sin only in combo with dark kit zoom, so your soul is clear. I like speed ring around lens mount, just like on most of FL RF's.

I've suspected Ricoh XR-20sp/XR-P are not big cameras, and just compared dimensions to OM-1 out of curiosity. And only height is bigger by some 5mm. Yes, this is good size - not too small and not overdone, too.

Ya, after some days shooting with that "speed-ring" on my OM-1, I have discovered being capable of knowing the actually set shutter speed w/o looking at. One finger touch is sufficient. Really nice feeling. Of course an addictive one.

Last night was not my proudest moment, photographically speaking. I thought I had loaded the camera with 400, and started shooting at 1600.

I must say shooting with this camera was was less obtrusive than my Canon 40d and its 50mm counterpart. Quieter, too. I had a wonderful time photographing the dinner party.

However when I got home this morning I realized that I hadn't even advanced to the first frame, AND I had a roll of 100 in there so the photos wouldn't have really turned out anyway. To add insult to injury I hand-rewound the slack on the roll of 100 so I could store it and went a little too far, and rewound the film completely in the canister. :bang:

So, I went out for a hike this afternoon to try it out. For real this time. Some of these photos are a rehash of what I did the other week (same hiking trail, some time of day), the lighting isn't too interesting because the park closes at 4pm, which is kind of odd I think.

I love this camera. It's fantastic. Ignoring the awesome mechanics of it, the image quality was super sharp, even with this super-common lens. I wonder why the heck I was even trying to put another fixed-lens rangefinder in my kit to begin with.

Here are some tests:

Some Arista Premium 100 (Plus-X) in 76 1:1. Handheld shots, had an orange 21 filter on the whole time.

Did that when I got started with OM-2. Take it as a "warming up your muscle" exercise.

I like this one a lot.

The rest is too grey for me. I wonder is it because of the orange filter, or did you tone down the highlights in post-processing?

Also, if you see a 50/1.8 that doesn't say F.Zuiko, get it. It should be even sharper.

I did tone down the highlights, I thought it appropriate considering I didn't care for the lighting (the sun being directly overhead). Someone else found them too low contrast for their taste as well. I'll probably take off the filter for next time, I just wanted to test it out.
