Looking for a replacement of my badly dented J8. Apart from the diaphragm, which one is better?

Seriously, there is no way to tell what is absolutely better, because performance can vary in several examples of the same lens. Quality control was not a priority in soviet factories, there are bad J8 and good J3, as well good J8 and bad J3.
Said that, J3 has a great advantage: collimation can be adjusted turning a block ring inside the barrel. J8 has no such kind of setup and it needs to use reshimming to collimate perfectly.
If you are prone to dismount the lens, probably you want a J3

The only J3 I ever dismantled was in Contax mount and it used metal rings as spacers and was adjusted by changing the thickness of the spacer - are you referring to the J3 in LTM?

I have an 80's J8 and an early 60's J3. Both are very good, but I think the J3 is a better performer overall. I'd hate to part with either one.
