Of late it has become difficult to do so without running into something that sets me on edge.

So, I've decided to take a break, not permanent, just don't know how long.

Yes, you can get "hurt" by any kind of discussion.
And the individual hurting did not want to, that individual just does not know you and your fellings.

Just happen to my wife with a new friend who got hurt by something she said!
Took a little time to clarify things and move on peacefully.

i think i understand the feeling. sometimes it seems more like a struggle to remain civil than it would be to just blast some arrogant a-hole.
my problem is that i have no one else to share this rf stuff with. my buds, even the ones who own cameras, soon & quickly start to get that glazed look when i talk of the differences in 35mm lenses or how i bought a summicron for 99 bucks etc.
