Hello everyone,

Now that they're officially out of cameras at Epson, they will become harder and harder to find. Anyone still keeping two or more R-D1 bodies in their inventory? If yes, what is your reason of doing so? Would you keep your multiple bodies in the long run?

Hi Kent,
I've got two of them, a R-D1s and a R-D1x. I wanted to try the R-D1x. Eventually I will give a spare one to family, for now I use both.

Hello Anttipantti,

Wish you'll reach one soon, and sooner than you thought. = ) They've come down much in price recently. Shoot whatever you have handy now.

Hello Aldobonnard,

Thanks very much for your reply. You carry both around with a different lens attached? Do you do your own rangefinder calibration or do you send them out?

Thanks everyone!

Some years back I bought both the R-D1 and the R-D1s. I am planning to buy the R-D1x and mothball it for use in later years. ps. A few weeks ago, jonmanjiro offered a new R-D1x on this site and with hindsight I should have tried harder to buy it...

Yes, one has got a MS MAG eyecup x1.3, to use with a 50mm and the other for wider lenses. They both had a recent service from Epson Japan (via japanexposures). That would be the only ones I would recommend. Super pro, super fast and precise high quality service (something I haven't experienced since I have left Switzerland for the UK if I am honest).
My advice is to not try to adjust yourself : the screws are blocked by some varnish / glue and it'll be tricky and too easy to mess up, unless you remove the top plate (lengthy process I never tried).
Rather use Epson service, the best value for money out there.

Basic rangefinder adjustments are easy to perform. Check the RD1 resource on the camerquest site.

I really don't think there is a need to keep 2 bodies. If you have the R-1Ds and worry about it's longevity, just have it checked out/serviced by the Japan Epson before 2016 and it will last you many more years to come.

By the time it gives up on you, Leica 240 maybe in the $3K range :)

Hi!

Any idea where I could ship my R-D1 for services? I just took it from my bag and its display was broken (the correspondent glass and the LCD itself, showing just a white screen)! :(

I just checked Japan Exposures, http://www.japanexposures.com/services/#parts, and I read as follows:
Camera Parts & Repair Service has been suspended. Thank you for your interest.

Thanks!

Sorry, I can't answer,
but one of the RD-1 interest, is that you don't need the rear LCD at all to change settings or take a picture ... if you shoot raw ! :)

Indeed I was luckier than that: my last settings read: R=Raw + Jpg@Black&White! :)

I will look here and there in Europe. In the meanwhile, my Epson R-D1 has been renamed as "Epson R-D1 Edition 60". ;-)

Best,

Giampiero

My setting too !! :)

good luck !
I think RD1s is alweys serviced ? and same LCD

I don't know. For sure the R-D1x is covered (until Late 2016, I guess), but that does not share the same LCD. I'm waiting for some replies here and there (Epson Italia, Nital Italia, local Leica shops in Milan and Verona). We will see.

However - as said - the LCD is not necessary. :)

Best,

Giampiero

Whatever. Sometimes it's a good strategy to go against the current. I now have the R-D1, the R-D1s and the R-D1x and I'll try to keep all three of them going the best I can. It's a very good camera with a distinct picture quality different from other brands.

I've got an R-D1 along with a R-D1s and have considered selling one of them, I just can't get myself to do it. I'm not sure what it is about them, all I know is when I am using them I really enjoy the experience.

Fortunately I soon realized that the R-D1 suits perfectly to my eye and
hand. We work together much like a musician and his favorite instrument.
Can’t imagine to give it away, really. ;-)
