My Kiev 4AM (new to me) does not have a rewind button on the bottom plate where my older Kiev 4's have it. I believe that when I loaded the film I recall seeing the corresponding button on the bottom of the shutter crate. The plate on the bottom of the removable back, however, is completely smooth except latches at either end. Am I missing something?
The serial number on this camera starts with 83. The serial number on the lens starts with 84.

Does one put the camera in rewind mode by unlatching just one of the 2 bottom latches?

Turn one of the baseplate latches to align with a red index. Then rewind as normal.

I just found the answer in the manual on Butkus.org. There is a red dot on the bottom plate next to one of the latches. You are supposed to turn the latch about a quarter turn until the latch handle lines up with the dot. Then you can rewind.

Correct, this is one of the improved items on a Kiev-4AM.

Some how missed this thread before. But yes, that is the way. I had the same problem as you, trying to figure out how to rewind film. Like you, I asked here and learned how to do it.
