I don't know if this is the best place to post this, but here it goes: Does anyone know where I could have this scanner repaired? It seems something mechanical has gone wrong - when I turn it on, it hums along and sounds like it calibrates okay, but when I try to put the negative tray in, the gears just sound like they are not engaging properly. They sound like they try to pull the tray in, but it does not move. I don't think it is an electronic issue. The day before, it fell about 2 feet onto a pile of books. From my little research, it does not appear that Sony is supporting repair of these scanners. Anyone help? I was about to do a little project involving family negatives! Dave

I think Sony is your best bet, I have not read of any independant servicing these. I hope you get it fixed - what a great little scanner it is!

Dave,
If you're in the UK, send it to Johnsons Photopia. I had my 5400 Elite serviced there a few months ago.

Okay, have found the link to have it repaired by Sony - I would have preferred to deal with an independent contractor, but at least there is someone who will work on it. Dave

Before you send for repair, be sure your negatives are not placed such that they prevent the holder from closing ABSOLUTELY flat. I had a too-long negative strip do that once and it made quite a grinding noise and would not pull in. It scared me until I figured it out!

Good thought, dmr, so I tried it the negative carrier without the negative in it, still no luck. The grinding noise just sounds like one of the gears is whirling away with a little clacking noise, but the carrier just sits there. Dave

Dave, are you able to "assist" the negative carrier into the machine I have the same scanner, and sometimes I need to nudge it a little when it makes that noise.

Could you please post that here? I would really like to have it in case it's needed. It actually makes me feel better about that scanner now that I know somebody has found a place for support?
Thanks.
