Kodak Medalist - Black case vs Brown case - military vs civilian?

I see them with brown cases and black ones, was this an option or were the black ones dyed black by their owners? Alternately were the black ones for the military versions and the brown for civilian? Dont see too many black ones. Can anyone confirm? Product catalog or something IDK?
