La Jetee is a 1/2-hour long 1962 French science fiction film about post-apocalyptic time travel. What's different about this film? It was made using 35mm black and white still photography using a Pentax SLR...
I mention this as I know of no other non-documentary film that was shot with a 35mm SLR comprised only of still images... It's actually quite a well-made film with an intelligent story and works quite well... The compositions and photography are excellent. Definitely worth checking out for anyone with an interest in still black and white photography who likes "real" science fiction...
Thought I'd mention, especially for those who have Netflix, since it's available streaming (and DVD).

The book is good too
I found the book in a thrift shop some time ago.
I also think that the movie 12 Monkeys is a remake of sorts.

Yes... 12 Monkeys was "inspired" by it, supposedly. But I don't think you'd ever make that association if you saw both films.

A Pentax Spotmatic to be exact. This movie is a classic!
12 Monkeys is not a remake, but was inspired by La Jetee.

Ahhh... the venerable Spotmatic. Wonder what lenses were used? Probably the more than venerable 50mm 1.4 Tak? Or did that come out later in the 60's? Forget.

Cool! Da whole flick... albeit low res. Thanks! This should be required viewing for anyone into photography. Would suggest the DVD, however, over any streaming to get the full impact of the beautiful images.

Forget DVD, track it down on 16mm and project it

There is/was a la jetee bar in Tokyo. Perhaps a member in Japan can confirm if it still exists.
A lot of Chris Markers work is fascinating with regards to images and memory. Sans Soleil (on the same DVD) is definitely worth viewing.

It's an amazing movie. There's a book of Marker's photographs that came out a couple years ago, with texts by him as well–looks like it's still available.

It certainly is a very inspiring film. Anyone I know has seen it was profoundly impressed by those moving still pictures. La Jetée in Orly airport still exists, and it is tru that 1960s parents would take the children there to see the planes take off. It was later closed when famous terrorist Carlos (they used to come from Sud-America at a time) shot a plane with a bazooka from them. "Now that was interesting" added a friend, comparing creative terrorism from that time to the raw butcheries we now have.
