Just followed the German Ebay where two very late M3s finished tonight. I wonder why both missed the lens release guard that I thought was present on all M3s. These had the same lens release button as the M2. Is this normal for late M3s?

If you look at the books written about Leicas and the cameras themselves you will see the last types were made without the ring when tooling up for and building the M4's. Read and understand the books by Lager and Vanhousebrok(sp) before makind a statement about the camera. I am amaized about all the so called knowledge here but a majority really knows very little.

He was asking a question, not making a statement in order to learn more of this knowledge - which, I thank you for sharing yours.

Welcome to RFF

I made (an apparently wrong) statement based on my 1.1 Mio camera, which I deleted.

Welcome, Thud. You know, the forum does allow you to send private messages.

Thanks for the info Thud and your 'amaizingly' quick response. I don't have the books and I'm not considering myself a knowledgeable collector, rather a curious member of the little-knowing majority of a friendly community of RF lovers.

Huubl, some of the cameras shown on your responce are very nice. To complement them you should get the books and gain some more knowledge to expand your collection. I'm pretty straight foward and at times blunt, but the type of questions that are asked and at times downright basic. What is needed is for people to do basic research and do the searches of many site to gain more info.

One thing about the M3 is that many examples have been modified over the years in various ways that will make them differ from their original configuration. DS to SS conversions, glass to metal pressure plates, PV levers added, etc. Some M3s can be tucked into an M2 body shell which will then produce a ring-less lens release (but not all M3s will fit into an M2 body shell).

NWM, Check Jims serial numbers and it will give you an idea of when the productiond started. Also Von Housbrok has more info. Most of the no rings were 1.2 mil if memory serves correct.
Of the 13 diffrent varients of the M3 yes there some changes mostly due to cost and durability issues encountered over time but to my knowledge the M3 didn't fit into the M2 only the viewfinder was adaptable to it.

Don't forget the story behind the fake MP's. A bit of intregue stolen top plates unscruples dealers from SoCal. and a lot of untrained collectors for the far east.
NWM master is correct go to any established Leica expert and they will help find you a real camera. If you really want one. Leica presentation cameras were mostly given with a finite number 150000, 1000000 numbers like that. It's not so unusual for that nu,mber to be given away.
