Recently I came across a poster asking about the LCD shades being sold, if they are of any convenience. Since I have one I think I can provide an answer.
First and foremost, under plain sun, or even under a daylight shadow at hours the sun is high, without any shade I cannot see nothing at the LCD screen. Some weeks ago I came across a turtle in a shadowed part of a street, at morning hours and was totally unable to make a decent picture, starting with viewing at the LCD screen for focus and composition. Obviously, due to the height, I couldnot use the tunel finder.
Now under the same conditions, with a new shade, you will be able to see something, including the central frame for focusing, but nothing else beyond that.
BTW, this proves that the lack of viewfinders in digitals is nothing else but a sign of distailed madness of camera designers and manufacturers. And as you know for sure, this is not the first time that a camera designers fall under mental illness.
Back to our issue about the LCD shades, I would like to pass my estimation that although the shades provide an extremely unsatisfactory image at peak suny hours, both under sun and at shadow, this meager something is much better than nothing. It is the difference between having a non perfect image and having no image at all.
Besides those situations, a shade does improve the LCD viewing, a lot.
I have seen at eBay two types of LCD screens. The cheaper cheapy one comes with a kind of highly transparent mask to stick the whole thing on the camera LCD.
At double price I bought a Kaiser digiShield, which is dismountable at any moment and attaches to the camera via the tripod thread. Being able to dismount the shield is of great convenience in my opinion, as otherwise you will be photographing everytime with a much bigger camera than the one you bought.
The Kaiser digiShield is a bit difficult to find at ebay, since it is sold only by two German sellers.
Cheers,
Ruben
