Here in Israel, we live in a hot, dry and dusty environment. There's no rain, from around May to October or November. My Desktop PC has 5-6 fans, including two up front, because that's what my techie believes in.

So here's the 2-part Question:

Leaving the PC on 24/7 has a wear & tear factor.

The PC likes being shut down every few days, and booting up from a
cold start.

What say you? Let's hear...
Thanks, Mike 😎

I'd recommend

I'd recommend

getting an efficient PSU with active PFC, and not oversized. Leave it on 24x7, but use OS settings to turn off or put unused peripherals in standby.

Pick up a Seasonic or kill-a-watt unit to measure actual costs. Blow out the fan and insides every few months with compressed air.

Electrical devices, like bulbs and other PC components 🙂 fail mostly when switched on. Leaving PC on 24/7 at home is overkill, at least for me, so I "Suspend to RAM" when not using it.
CPU's can be throttled down when inactive. For HDD's I'm more optimistic for lowering RPM's not switching off completely - spin-up from zero time is disturbing and again, we hit on/off/on issue. Fans also can (are, mostly) be set to lower rpm's depending on load.

Cleaning it monthly helps keep temps lower. There are cases with easily removable intake filters - colleague advocates them strongly as dust gets much less into case and cleaning means mostly cleaning filters with several cleanings of case a year.

Yes! Some do believe that daily booting up of Desktop PC's, also makes for tremendous wear & tear. Next time we have a maintenance session here, I'll show my technician some of the comments, herein. Again, thanks!
