I an finding the giant Leica 28mm elmarit-m hood to be really big and defeats the compactnes of the lens.
What is a good lens cap I can attach directly to the lens?

If you have the 11606 2.8 asph the Summicron asph 11604 hood is the same.

You can buy a lot of different 39mm hoods here: https://www.ebay.com/str/heavy2starsphotogear and they are cheap. And good.

Or you can buy 2 or 3 39mm filters, knock the glass out of them and stack the rings. Probably more expensive than a HeavyStar hood.

Or, you can go really crazy and trade your 11606 for an 11677 with the integrated metal hood.

Good luck!

A short hood is good protection both mechanically and optically.

I've made short hoods by buying very cheap Chinese filters of the correct size, removing and discarding the glass, and stacking as many empty filter rings, usually two or three, as will not vignette.

The "Heliopan 39mm Short Metal Lens Hood" works well and will accept a 39mm lens cap which may solve your problem. I have used this one on my 28mm Elmarit 2.8 ASPH when I'm not using a filter. My B+W UV filter causes vignetting on the 28mm.
Hope this helps.
