Just got a Bargain 90mm Tele-Elmarit from KEH. Everything looked pristine until I put the lens under some direct sunlight and noticed what appears to be some haze. Is this the dreaded tele-elmarit haze that seems to be circulating online?

That's not the dreaded haze people refer to. Even a good lens is going to show a trace amount of haze if the illuminating source is bright enough. I've seen this even after a professional CLA.

I've just took another look and I still see this haze when I put a halogen lightbulb just off axis of the lens. The haze/fog is not super noticeable but appears to be not completely uniform (more on the edge). I can't reproduce the same type of hazy look on the rear element with my other lenses (28/2.8ASPH, 50/2 or 16-35/2.8 zoom).

I should note that when I look straight through the lens at normal scenes indoors, I don't notice the haze at all. Is it still a cause for concern?

I don't know if your haze will have any impact (flare, lost of contrast etc.), but it definitely is not the dreaded Tele-Elmarit disease. I've seen that, and it looks like someone etched it or sandblasted it. Maybe all your lens needs is a cleaning. I suggest shooting some test shots such along with other lenses and see. KEH gives you 2 weeks to make up your mind if you'll keep the lens.

Be aware though, that the 90 T-E has visibly lower contrast @ f/2.8 that perks up nicely at f/4 and smaller. I have that lens, as well as the older "fat" version, and a pre-ASPH Summicron, so I'm familiar with the subtle differences.

The thin TE also flares badly under some lighting conditions - so make sure you eliminate this variable when testing - otherwise they produce v. sharp images - good luck

I have one that has stripes of haze, and this after a CLA... but in the end I like that I don't notice any undue effects, it was acquired at bargain prices and looks great cosmetically.

Not indicative of anything, but I liked the shot as it was out my front door:

That's a gorgeous sunset!

I'll definitely have to give the TE a good test before I decide to lose $100 in shipping fees to send it back.

Wow Beewee.

Thanks for that link to the damaged lens. Puts it all into perspective. I start to worry as soon as I take a lens cap off. I think I can relax and enjoy photgraphy after seeing that link.

Amen brother...

And beewee thank you, it was presented before my eyes and I responded to it's intensity and was fortunate that the gods of silver halide respected my prayers 😉
