I bought what I thought was an orange filter for my Summitar. When it came, it did not look like my other orange filters. The color was more transparent. I noticed the letter A on the ring. This apparently is a color conversion filter, not an orange filter. Rather than go through the hassle of sending it back, I would like your opinion as to whether or not I can use this heavy warming filter for black and white and get the dark cloud effect an orange filter would have given me. The filter is mint and Leica made.

No, you won't get the same 'dark cloud' effect as an orange filter -- but it will have a marked yellow/orange effect, probably quite attractive.

Roger, With black and white film in the Leica, how would results differ from an orange filter , lets say on a street scene with buildings and a landscape?

It will only differ slightly. It would depend on the film, e.g. T-Max films have a higher red sensitivity than Delta, and lower blue (proportionately). It'll look a bit like a deep yellow. Why not try it?

I will have to wait a few weeks to try it. I sent my camera and lens to DAG for a clean. I just bought a Summar as well, so now I need to find a hood or step up ring . I think the step up ring is 34 to 37?

The A filter won't have much effect at all. It's not a sharp cutoff filter, like a real Or filter is.
