Hello,

Today my first Leica III a (user condition) arrived at home.

At first glance, all speeds seems to work (and the slow speeds look OK), but when I select 1/1000 s at the shutter speed dial the wheel latches in a elevated position, about 1 mm higher than at the other speeds.

Is this normal at a Leica III a or should I be worried?

Regards,
Thomas

That seems to be normal with a lot of the cameras that have shutter speed dials that rotate. The Nikon S2 does the same; I think the Canon bottom loader RFs, FEDs and Zorkis do as well.

This is an extract from the Leica user manual for the IIIf - on p. 6 next to a photo of how to turn the shutter speed dial:

"After winding shutter, lift main speed dial, turn it until the desired speed is opposite the arrow and allow the dial to drop into its catch. At 1/1000 sec. the dial will not drop back quite so deeply"

You can get a pdf of the manual on the net - hit google.

It's normal. The 1/1000th uses a separate timing mechanism and that's why, it sits higher so the mechanics misses the "normal" one.
